SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

r ' GERALDINE, The monthly meeting of the above Committee was held in the schoolrcom on Monday evening. Present—Messrs N. Dunlop (Chairman). J. Cunningham, W. Shiers, R. S. Cook, G. Ward, T. Farrell, and.C. B. Sberraft. . . MINDTES. ' The minutes of the previous meetipg were read and couponed. COKEBSfOHDENCE. The following correspondence was then read and dealt with t From the Board of Eduction, informing, the Committee that the sum of £l2 7s id had been placed to their credit at the Bank of New Zealand, From the same, covering the applications for the Head Mastership, with the Inspectors classification and report thereon. From the same, giving their sanction to the Committee to take over the copper

boiler left by Mr Hughen, and agreeing to recoup the Committee for the cost; also authorising the Committee to sell by auction *oitie old windows they had on hand. It was resolved, upon the motion of Mr Cunuiogh'm, seconded by Mr Farrell—“ That the’prioe agreed upon for tl e boiler, £2 15s, be paid to Mr Hughe's and a voucher for the same drawn on tin Education Board." It was also resolved, upon the proposition of Mr Ward, seconded by Mr Cunningham—“ That the Chairman write to the Board of Education, stating that the windows would bring nothing at auction, and that if would piobably be to the Board’s advantage if sold privately.” From Mr R. S. Cook, stating that he had started the ma"iifecturfe of ink in Geraldine, and offering to supply the Committee at 5a 6d per gallon, in quantities of two gallons.—lt resolved, upon the motion of Mr Sbiers, seconded by Mr Cunningham, to recommend the Head Master to get two gallons of the ink in order to give it a trial. The Inspector’s report on the general woik'Dg of the school was alao received, and considered highly satisfactory. TISTIMONIAL. The testimonial which had been prepu ed for presentation to Mr T. Hughes, on! which was signed by all the exChairmen and by tbie members of the present. Committee, was read and approved of. TISITOKS. Mr Ward reported that himself and Mr Sherratt had visited the school that day, and found it in good working order, with all the teachers in their place, and n attendance of 179. They suggested that a load or two of shingle be laid down i.i the school yard. They also stated that •he river had encroached somewhat on the school ground. The Chairman thought that some place should be erected for putting the hats and el oaks Messrs Dunlop and Shiors were appointed visitors for the month, with power to carry out the necessary repairs. HOUSES W FLATOROUKD. It was resolved, upon the proposition of Mr Ward, seconded by Mr Sbiers “That no horses be allowed in the playground in future, on account of damage to fences and danger to children.” BEAD MASTERSHIP. In addition to the Inspector’s report and classification, a telegram was read from Dr Anderson, stating that he had had an opportunity of seeing Mr G. B. Turnbull at work in the Geraldine school, and also •onversing with one of his references. He had theretore much pleasure in recommending him for the permanent appointmi nt of Head Master. After due consideration it was unanimously resolved, upon the motion of Mr Cunningham, seconded by Mr Farrell—- “ That Mr G. B. Turnbull be appointed Head Master of the Geraldine school.” The Committee expressed themselves I ighly plesaed at having obtained the services of such a competent Head Master. PUNISHMENT OF CHILDREN. One or two of the members having stated that complaints hud been made to them of the system employed in punishing the children, it was unanimously resclved upon the motion of Mr Cunningham, seconded by Mr Cook —“That all punishment be inflicted by the Head Master.” This being all the business before the Committee, the meeting closed. SOUTH ORABI. The ordinary meeting of the South Orari School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening last. Present—Messrs R. A. Barker (chairman), Bisset, McLeod, and Naughton. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting wc-re read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence from the Education Board was read asfollnwa j—(#) Not'fying that the sum of £4 15s 4d had been paid to the credit of the Commit'eo as incidentals for the present quarter ; (ft) Notifying in reply to the Cnmmittfie’a application for a grant of £5 for repairs, that the Board decided to grant half the sum applied for up to an expenditure of £5; (c) Covering the Inspector’s report. REPAIRS. Be repairs to the Master's house it was resolved “ That Mr Whitehead’s offer be accepted.” inspector’s report. The Inspector’s report was then read. Resolved j— “Th rt t the Committee feel satisfied with the state of the school raster’s report. The Master’s report showed that for the last few weeks the attendance had been slightly below that of the previous month owing to the recent bad weather. The strict average was—Boys, 17 ; girls, 13.6 ; total, 30.6. VISITOR. Mr Coles being absent, no visitor’s report was presented. Mr Naughton was appointed visitor for next month, ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £5 12s were passed for payment, after which the meeting adjourned to the third Monday in September.
