At the Police Court, Auckland, on Monday, Geo. McCadin and wife were fully committed for trial on a charge of. petting fire to a house at the corner of Randolph street and Newton road. The Petrel case was continued at the Police Court, Auckland, on Monday. A boy named Henry Mills was found dead under a dray in bis charge at Clambridge, Auckland. It had been hpset on going out of a swamp where he had been collecting firewood. Death must have been instantaneous ; the horse was killed also. A young man, Edward Borges, while out shooting at Nelson on Sunday shot himself below the shoulder,' scattering his collar bone. He is now lying in a precarious condition.' ■ f As the cab was leaving the Auckland gaol on Tuesday containing the captain and mate of the Petrel, the horse swerved through hearing the whistle of a : ballast train, and the engine struck the bind part of the cab, making it a wreck. The prisoners escaped uninjured. Word has been received from , Wright’s survey paity of Tongariro being active on the night of the Turawera eruption. The noises in the mountain were alarming. The party expected an eruption every hour. Owing to the weather the party have been unable to examine the mountain side. Under the arrangement of certain shareholders in the Champion Copper Company, Nelson, and with thp'leave of the Court; smelting operations were Commenced on Sunday afternoon. The furnace has beeu<going splendidly ever since, and the copper has been running freely. At I a.m.' on Tuesday a cottage at Spreydon, belonging to Mr W. D. Campbell, was burned down. |lt is supposed to be an act of incendiarism, as fires were discovered burning in two rooms. The criminal statistics of the police for the quarter show an increase in cases of drunkenness in Dunedin of 76 compared with the previous quarter. During the three months 481 cases were dealt with, 430 convictions resulting, and of these 252 were for drunkenness. During the last quarter the number of public houses with 11 o’clock licenses was greatly increased.
