LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

In the Legislative Council on Friday, Dr Menzies gave notice to move that power be given to the masters in State schools to read the Bible in school hours.

Mr Buckley announced that Mr Reynolds had been sworn m as a member of the Government.

The Charitable Trusts Extension Bill was debated ou th* second reading, and some opposition shown by Dr Holmes and Dr Pollen.

The debate was adjourned, and the Council rose.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

The House met at 2.30 p.m, on Friday. Replying to questions, it was stated that plans for the Manawatu-Gorge line would be ready in a week or two, when tenders would be called ; that the question of the amendment of the Bankruptcy Act during the session was now under consideration.

On the motion for going into Committee of Supply, Major Atkinson said that after the vote taken the previous day, the Opposition would not attempt any factious opposition, but they threw the responsibility of making reductions on the Government.

The House went into Committee of Supply for the consideration of the Estimates.

The following votes were passed Vote, £7710, General Post Office ; Chief Offices and sub-offices, £123,353 ; Maintenance, repairs, etc., £40.246; Telegraph Cable subsidies, £3500 ; Conveyance of Mails by Sea, £72,868 ; Conveyance of Inland Mails, £28,180 ; Carriage of Mails by Railway, £IOOO. Progress was then reported. The House went into Committee on the Native Equitable Owners Bill, which passed with verbal amendments. The Municipal Corporations Bill was further considered in Committee. The House rose at 5.30.

The House resumed in Committee on the Municipal Corporations Bill. The whole sitting up to 10 o’clock was occupied by a discussion of the Bill, and a large number of clauses were passed without material alteration. Mr Hatch moved that clause 406 Councils may contribute funds for school buildings—be struck out.—Lost.

The remainder of the Bill was then passed, leaving only some proposed clauses to be dealt with.

The Coal Mines Bill, the object of which is to place the mines under separate enactments, paassed its second reading. Mr Stout moved the second reading of the Counties Bill, explaining that it was merely a consolidation measure. After some argument the Bill was read a second time, and the House adjourned at 11.55.
