TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held last night. Present—rMeesrs Gray (Chairman), Blytb, Brown, Mason and Quinn. MINUTES. On tho minutes being read Mr Brown seid (V hvt meeting ho understood that Mr Two* msy was to gat until the following morning to consider whether he would advertise th* By-lawa at half price. \ Mr Quinn said it was not so. It was de* ' j aided to advertise them in the Herald, - 1 Mr Brown said it was not. Mr proposed a resolution to that effect and refused to second it. Mr Quinn said that was true, bat Mr Gray said it was not necessary to pass a resolution. Mr Twomey said he would give his answer next morning to the Clerk, and he (Mr "w Quinn) said they would not wait. The Chairman said the question now was the confirmation of the minutes, Tho minutes wore then confirmed. Subsequently Mr Brown asked how mu h' ? ’ ihe Board had lost by sending the adyeft fisement to Timiru. Tho Clerk said he had received a memo, from the Timaru Herald, stating that the actual cost of advertising Bylaw No, 2 £9 16s, but that £l6s was taken off,

Hr Quinn said the Timara Herald had treated them very generously. It was remark*d that only By law No. 3 had bean published, and that had not taken a quarter of ths space that the whole By-laws would take. aim nraioAflHinira. lb Quinn said he brought the snbjeet of the rim encroachment up at the Boad Board meeting, and tbby all agreed that to deal with the matter it wovld be necessary to appoint a Board of Conservators. The Chairman said he had had a look at the place, and if another flood came the river would comedown to Temuka. Mr Blyth asked hod they power to deal with ill She Chairman said they had not, It was better to convene a pablic meeting, and have boundaries proclaimed. It was a matter for the whole town to consider. Hr Quinn did not think they would be able to raise sufficient funds. Mr Cray said they eonld proclaim the boundaries as far as Winchester. Mr Quinn said they would have to get two*tbirda of the ratepayers to consent. It only offsetrd Temuka. Mr Blytl aid it effected more than Temnka. If it brake into a gully at Mr Bees Thomas' the river would go down the Sod Town ereek, and in his opinion it would break out there sooner than it would reach Temuka. The Chairman said it was better to call a pnblio meeting, and after some farther conversation the matter dropped. UNBSGISIBBBD HOGS. In reply to Ur Quinn, the Clerk said the police would this month pioseoate owners of unregistered dogs. . OTIBSISE’S REPORT. The Overseer's report was as follows "I have the honor to report that during the last month I have had one man employed 18} day* clearing out water channels and ■preoding shingle on footpaths; one man with horse and dray carting rubbish, and two mtn and two horses and drays six days carting shingle. I have had the gully in Cass street filled up, which no doubt will be of service in case ef ordinary flood, at a cost of If 10s. 1 have called for tenders for forming and shingling Godley street. The work requiring to be done ie finishing pstohing the Main South Boad, and other streets especially from Ur B. Brown’s corner to the Bailway Station gates. 1 also intend to patch up the footpath in front of the Post* office with asphalt. 1 went to Timaru and ascertained the mode, and also the cost of laying down asphalt, but lam afraid their prooeas is to expensive, as drying kilns, boileis, ate., would eoet at least £IOO. But I should recommend that in case the Board decide •n laying down asphalt to defer it until ■ummsr as then the shingle can be dried in the sun. Instead of having fixed boilers in ■beds, have, say, two portable boilers, which in summer would I think answer the same purpose. The ocst in Timaru after the list outlay is, I believe, a little less thau 2s per yard. The balance in Bank last regular Board day was £163 19s 9d; accounts paid since 118 10s 2d; received 10s for dog collars, leaving a balance of £lB5 9a 7d, A good deal of rates are still outstanding, and u not collected this month the Board will sot be entitled to the subsidy under iba Local Bodies Powers and Finance Act. Gbobou Dxbon, With regard to defaulting ratepayers Mr Haiou moved that half-a-dosen names be selected by ballot and sued. Mr Blyth moved— ,, Tfaat a week’s notioe be givsa to defaulters, and that any who have notpoid by the 9tb June be sued,” The amendment was seconded by Mr Brows and earned. lours. In reply to a question with regard to the lamps applied for by theßev Mi Thomas and Mr Brown, the Clerk reported that there was not a great deal of traffic where it was asked to ercet them, bnt it would complete the lighting of the main street to ereot them. Mr Brown said he had been that way the previous night, and eonld not see the street, The Chairman said the night waa ex* liemely dark. Mr Brown proposed that the lamps be erected, but no one seconding the motion it fell through. AOOOVNXO. Account* to the amount of £Bl 8s 7d were passed for payment, and the meeting ad* loomed.
