GERALDINE TOWN BOARD

The monthly meeting of this B >unl was held at the Board’s office ou Tuesday evening. Present —Messrs R. H. Pearpoint (Chairman), J. Huffey, W. S. Maslin, N. Dunlop, and J, Mundell. MINUTES. The minutes of tho previous meeting wore read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read and approved, and inward was read us follows : From the Hon. W. Rolleston, stating that Government had determined not to form Geraldine and Temuka into Boroughs ; also forwarding a copy of the new Municipal Coporations Act and Amended Counties Act.

From Mr W. Coltman, stiling that he had spent tho sum of $4 9a 6d

in laying down asphalt in front of bis property, and as the Board had now resolved to lay a strip of asphalt four feet wide through the whole length of the street, he asked the Board to refund the money he had spent, Other people were now getting the asphalt for nothing.—lt was decided that the Board could not entertain the applies tion.

had accepted the tender of Mr J. Jackson. application re rates. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Good Templars’ Lodge, asking that the Good Templars’ Hall be exempt from rates.

From the R«v. J. Preston, asking that the Anglican Parsonage should be exempt from rates.

As no application had been sent in by the Secretary of the Literary Institute, Mr Mundell, being one of the Institute Committee, applied that that building be exempt from rates, The Chairman stated that the Rev Father Keane had spoken to him with reference to the Roman Catholic Par* sonage being exempt from rates. Mr Maslin stated that if these places ~ were to be exempted from rates he should apply for the residence of the Rev.'J, Boothroyd to be exempt also, as Mr Boothroyd had the house tor twelve months free of rent,

A long discussion took place, on the matter, and finally it was proposed by Mr MasMn, seconded by Mr Taylor, and carried—“ That this Board regret their inability to remit any rates.”

INTERVIEW. Mr Morrison interviewed the Board with regard to a culvert placed across the road near Messrs Williams aad Son’s shop, an all the water from the hills ran over the bast part of his reserve.—The Chairman slated that the Board would consider the matter, and Mr Morrison withdrew.-It was afterwards decided that Mr Morrison’s application be left in the l ands of tho Works Committee to deal with, MISCELLANEOUS Mr Maslin drew the attention of the Board to tho flow of water running across the road by Mr Stringer’s, As there was no plank people had to wade through the water. —The Overseer was instructed to place a plank across at once.

The Overseer was instructed to report to the Works Committee with regard to the water flowing over Messrs Sutherland's and Dickens’ sections.

It was resolved that the Board apply to the Colonial Treasurer for the 75 per cent, subsidy on £IBO, the amount of rate raised.

A lung discussion took place in regard 'to advertising that all rates not paid by the 14th instant be sued for. It was, finally resolved that one advertisement he inserted in the Geraldine Guardian, S.C. Times, and the Timaru Herald ; tbs advertisement to be inserted on the same day.

overseer’s report. ..- The Overseer’s report was read, and showed that the concrete and asphalt work now being dona by the men in the Board’s employ was proceeding satisfactorily. ACCOUNTS, Accounts to the amount of £124 12s5d wore pass' d for payment, and the Board ro.-olved itself into a BOARD OP HEALTH. The Inspector of Nuisances’ report was road, and showed that the sanitary state of the town was good. There being nothing in the report calling for discussion, the meeting tormuiatod.
