GERALDINE WATER SUPPLY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — The Geraldine Town Board have had several meetings since 1 wrote and suggested that a report should be made by Messrs Marchaut and Meason of the probable expense of obtaining water from the Waihi in an open waterrace. Since then several plans have been proposed ; One to sink several wells in the town, and the water to bo raised by American windmills ; another, to sink a well close to the town in the river, as I understand it, and have an open race from there. Now, we all know the cost of these American windmills, and how they are continually getting out of repair and being given up. I still adhere to my first idea—that the Town Board should get the Engineers mentioned above to come out and report upon the various ideas suggested, with the cost of each—and in the meantime the Board should write to the two gentlemen whoso land the water race will go through to ascertain on what terms a race will be allowed. My own idea is the race will so add to the value of the land by having a constant stream running through it that the leave will be given to the Board free of expense. Now before a public meeting is called to discuss what fire engine shall be bought, I would suggest, Get your water supply first. If you don’t the ratepayers will laugh at the engine lying in the shed with no chance of being used for (he want of water. Therefore, I would suggest to the Board : Get the Engineer out and have the various plans reported upon, with the cost of each ; then call a public meeting and lay it before the ratepayers. And when you have got your water then talk of a fire engine, not before.-—I am, etc.,
