The Tainui, which was appointed ' to sail for London from Wellington last Sunday night, was detained, by an accident to her main steam pipe, till Monday afternoon. Jeremiah Ryan, for stabbing whom a man named Delaney was lately committed for trial, was charged at the R.M., Court, Invercargill, yesterday, with having been guilty of perjury while giving evidence in the stabbing case. The Bench, however, declined to proceed with the case on the ground that the charge against Delaney is pending. The Bench mtimated that the charge could be brought on afresh after Delaney’s trial. On Saturday, three brothers, named Kidd, and a young man named Gorman, were bathing in the Makarewa, near Forest Hill, Southland. John Kidd, got out of his depth in a deep pool, and his brother Henry and Gorman went to his assistance. They all got into dangerous positions, and Charles Kidd tried to save them. He extended a long stick, which they caught, but Henry Kidd, aged 27 years, was unable to retain bis hold, and was drowned. The others were got ashore all right. At Christchurch, a fisherman named Richard Harper has been missing since Wednesday night. His boat was found on the Sumner Beach, and he is supposed to have been drowned.
