DRILL SHED FOR GERALDINE.

Some time ago—before the last session dosed in Wellington—Captain Moore bad some correspondence with tbe member for the district, the Hon. W. Rolleston, and also the members of the Upper House representing South Canterbury, in reference to getting a grant from Parliament to build a didlshed for Geraldine. The result v>as lh*at L2OO was placed on the Estimates for that purpose. As this sum alone would be inadequate to build a hall of any size, Captain Moore has endeavored to augment the amount by soliciting subscriptions from gentlemen in the district, and has succeeded in obtaining promises for a considerable amount. The grant, aided by the subscriptions will still, however, be insufficient to build a hall of the size contemplated, viz,, 100 ft long by 40ft wide, and at a meeting of the Managing Committee of the corps held on Saturday last, a sub-committee, consisting of the three officers of the corps were appointed to ascertain if the balance of the money required could n'ot be borrowed on satisfactory terms. If i

so, the work of building the hall will ha put in hand at once. Most of our readers are no doubt aware that a site for the drillshed has been set aside by the Govern men t—being part of the Pound Reserve opposite Mr Pearpoint’s store g This will be vested in trustees for the use of the corps, It is proposed to build and furnish the hall in such a manner as will render it available for other purposes than drill—such as public meetings, amusements, etc.—and it is contemplated that it will, on the occasion of large gatherings, supply a much-felt want.
