Smallpox is raging at Khartoum. Feb. 17. A great struggle has taken place between the adherents of Sir Stafford j Northcote and the followers of Lord Randolph Churchill for the Presidency of the Central Tory Onion, which means the control of the whole electoral machinery of the party. The result was the election of Lord Randolph Churchill as President. It is feared that the ship Alexander Duthie, from Sydney to London, has foundered at sea. It is considered probable that the Admiralty will accept the temporary services of the Victorian gunboats on the Egyptian Coast. Increased activity is being manifested among the followers of till Mahdi in the 6outh-east, and Kassala, an important town near the northern frontier of Abyssinia, has been invested by the rebels. Feb. 16. From enquiries which have been made into the circumstances attending the fall of Sinkat last week, it has been ascertained that besides the garrison of the town and the male inhabitants, two hundred women and the same number of children were massacred by the rebel fanatics. Feb, 17. Gordon Pasha arrived yesterday at Khartoum, and was well received by the population. He has issued a proclamation, and has caused it to be publicly posted throughout the districts. The document recognises El Mahdi as Sultan , of Kordofan, and announces the remission of half the taxes now levied, and that free traffic in slaves (sic) will be permitted. The British expedition to Souakim will be confined to the relief of Tokar, and will not operate further against the rebels, Spies have arrived at Souakim stating that the Arabs are now mustering in force near Tokar.
