OPUNAKE ARRANGEMENTS

USE OF LAKE HEAP RACE Arrangements for the learn-to-swim campaign to open at Opunake on December 5 were completed at a meeting of the executive of the Opunake Surf Life-Saving Club. Instruction will be given to the pupils of most schools of the district, Mr. E. Pickering being the chief instructor, with Mr. - A. L. Herdman as officer in charge of time-tables. Endeavours are being made to arrange v/ith employers to allow surf club members time off to assist and, wherever possible, schools are to be asked to bring pupils to Opunake in view of the difficulty of sending instructors to centres outside the town. Assistant instructors appointed were:

Messrs. J. Yep, W. E. Smith, L. Herdman, V. Eigar, D. Clegg, D. Burton, S. Earraclough, G. Byars, L. Northcott, A. McKenzie, H. S. McCullum, K. Hickey, D. De Castro, J. Hooper, S. McNae, J. Dudley, and any other members of the club who can be relieved from their work duties. • ' Use of the head-race at the lake has been granted by the Opunake ElectricPower Board for instructional purposes. fci approximately 180 children repreeenting the following schools: Opunake Convent, Rahotu, Mangahume, Ihaia Road, Waiteika Road and Pihama. In addition, the pupils of the Opua Road, Kina Road, Arawhata Road and Oaonui schools will receive instruction in pools available near those centres. It is hoped .to set aside a day on which children may qualify for swimming certificates. It has also been suggested that preaaht swimmers might take the opportunity of receiving instruction in the correctstroka and breathing method. Three nights will be set apart for this purpose after the iake swim for the Brown Cup. Tests of a new type of siren alarm, which it is proposed to install in plaoe of that now in use, will be held tomorrow. The executive decided that voluntary workers should rough-cast the side and back walls .of the club house. Those present at the meeting were Messrs. W. H. Haggett (chairman), N. Reardon, E.
