SIDELIGHTS ON RACING EXCITING RACE for cup
Whangarei, Last Night. Favourites were consistently beaten on the opening day of the Whangarei Racmg Club's spring meeting, not one first ehoice on the win machine being successful, and some remunerative dividends were returned. The chief event, the Whangarei Cup, was won by Tybalt after an exciting race, and the rider, G. Gilchrist, met with a rousing reception. At a surprisingly good price in a moderate field, Raepata, who was trailed off early in the Hikurangi Handicap, came from flfth at the turn to win in easy style. By Brazen— Capsina he has reached four years old without winning a race but this effort suggests that he has improved. Droll was always handy enough and she ran on to snatch second place from the pacemaker, Hopalong, on the post. Mai de Mer had every chanoe but faded out from second at the turn. Lythite ran wide at the first turn and was then beaten off. Gaiwind and The Vamp were. not impressive. Douhle-Figure Divitlcnd. A double-figure dividend on the win machine attended the win of Raceline in the Spring Plate. Well placed early, he drifted in the middle stages but put in a great run on the outside to win going away. Flashing Spear and Viracious made most of the race and they were just headed near the post. Viracious was fairly wide on the home turn and he did well to get second. Lapidarian went through fast on the xnside in the middle stages but then stopped badly. Ohrnaha was with the leaders at the distance but then weakened. Beverley was tailed off last at the half mile and then made up a lot of ground to ftnish fourth. The favourite, Himting Blood, was well placed from the start but he ran greenly and appeared to be hanging out badly. Simint Performs Well. " The second favourite, Simint, jumped to the front at the first fence in the Huanui Hurdles and was never troubled to win by a big margin. He. gave a good exhibition of jumping and is on the upgrade. The favourite, Kilberis, jumped slqwly at several fences and had too much leeway to make up. He will need to speed up his fencing to be a success. Backblock was a poor third and Gay Cavalier, who waa in second place for a circuit, faded out. Siwell was outclassed. Young Elder Cheered. The success of Tybalt in the Whangarei Cup was the signal for a great outbursfc of cheering for his young rider, G. Gilchrist, who did not leave the rails at, any stage of the contest and won
rather luckily by a run on the rails in the coneluding stages. It was a glimpse of Tybalt's real form and he finished in game style. Orac took charge early and led with Sergia at the home turn, the early leader, Tybalt, having drifted to last. Orac and Sergia left the rails in the straight and Tybalt finished fast to snatch victory by a neck. Sergia beat Orac by a head, with. Tip Toes a close fourth. It was a splendid race between the five horses with the run of the race favouring the winner. British Banncr Wins. The favourite Viracious did not fuitlL expectations in the County Handicap and after being first he was beaten into fourth place. Chief Lap was in front of a strung-out field at the end of a furlong and had a clear lead at the turn from Enlightenment and British Banner, but he weakened in a hard ftnish and British Banner just beat his stable mate, Enlightenment. British Banner is a goodlooking six-year-old by British King and he should do better. Parado and Flamberge did best of the others but were a good way back. Gold Pocket fell in the straight and was destroyed. Royal Passage in Form. A hot favourite, Huntingmore, was beaten into third place in the Kensington Handicap. First out from the inside position he led Solo Song and Royal Passage to the turn and then weakened badly. Royal Passage just outstayed Solo Song to win well. Royal Passage looks extremely well and was freer from soreness than when he last raced. Mangakaha was fourth after losing her position early and being forced very wide when making a good run on the home turn. My Money and Peter's Pence were never going like prospective winners. Tosh in Good Finish. The Manaia Handicap saw Tosh, Bachelor King, Paso Robles and Crooning in a bunch which set a fast pace for three furlongs. Tosh and Bachelor King had a clear lead at the hoine turn and Tosh stalled off Crooning and Tray Bit in a good ftnish. The winner has raced consistently and both he and Crooning ran true to form. Tray Bit lost ground over • the first furlong but came home in good style. Bachelor King faded into fourth place "and Paso Robles did not finish after being bqslied in the early stages. Tiurilling DueL Only five started for the Parahaki Handicap and in a thrilling duel Ringshot got up to beat Orac by a narrow margin after the latter had hcld a clear lead to the home tum. Orac bored out badly on Ringshot at the finish, but for which the winner's margin might have been more than half a head. The other three runners were strung out in the early stages but High Tea finished well to be a good third. Te Hai also made up ground, but Airam was always in last place.
