Sporting Song was a good favourite for the Hack Steeplechase and he never put a foot 'wrong. He won well but' was tinder pressure over the final bit to hoia Given, who was third, and Rioghail, who fmished resolutely to get up on the post ahd cut Given out of second. It was a great race with Lord Hereford and Given fighting for the lead until the former ran off at a fencej about three furlongs from home. Given, jumping gloriously. was in front after most of the fences. Sporting Sorig was weli back until five furlongs from home but Thomson then moved forward'to follow Given into the straight, with Rioghail and Count Willonyx next. The quartette was bunched at the last fence and in a great race home Sporting Song beat Rioghail by a long neck and Given was only a head back. Count Willonyx was fourth ahd Petrarch, whose chance was spoiled by two bad jumps, next. Captain Furst. y , Captain Furst, a half-brother to Werohia by Arausio, was favourite for the Maiden Stakes and after taking charge at the three furlongs he always looked a winner. Vadanoe, from Hawera, was unlucky in losing ground at ihe start but finished well in second place. Galteemore was. third. Skyfull, Knightsbridge and Vadanoe got the worst of the start, the early leader being Fair Isle from Master Hector and Aria.' The last named had charge after a furlong but passing the three furlongs Captain Furst was setting the pace, followed by Aria, Master Hector, Glenthawn . and Fair Isle. .Captain Furst showed the way into the straight attended by Master Hector, Glenthawn, Vadanoe and Notice. The issuo was never in doubt, Captain Furst winning well from ihe fast finishing Vadanoe, and Galteemore came'from well back into third place. Glenthawn was fourth, followed by Naughty Marietta. Arctic King Stays. The Dannevirke Handicap, was well won by Arctic King, who came with a sustained run to beat Werohia, Mandamus and Catalogue, who had a great struggle for second. Mandamus was tlie early leader from Catalogue, Werohia, Hazoor, Gay Boy and Pakanui and the field was in close order passing the five furlongs. Hazoor had moved up into second place and Rona Bay was aliead of Catalogue. Three furlongs from home the leader s were Mandamus, Rona Bay, Werohia, Hazoor, Catalogue and Arctic King, and there was no change into the home stretch, where Arctic King, on the outer, overhauled the others and won decisively. Export Wiua Narrowly. ' War Lap was favourite for the Makirikiri Handicap but after leading into the straight he was beaten out of the money, the winner being Export, who scored by the narrowest of margins from Royal Record. War Lap was with Lucullus Lad in front at the half mile and led, into tlie straight closely followed by Royal Record, Export (who had run up) and Lucullus Lad. Royal Record and Export drew out to fight a desperate finish. Two lengths away came Collision, just in front of Cloudy Bay. ( Lone Raider Finishes Well. Lone Raider was well backed but was only fifth favourite for the open sprint but finished too solidly for the Pacemaker, Huntette, and won by half a head. Red Manfred ran a good race, finishing two lengths away. Refresher was prominent at - the home turn but did not gOi on. Huntette, Refresher, Land Tax, Lady Ina and Red Manfred was the order when the line was broken. Red Manfred improved crossing the top , and Huntette showed the way into the straight followed by Land Tax, Red Manfred, Refresher, Hunting Lodge and Lady Ina. Taro was favourite for the Tahoraite Handicap but was beaten out of the money. The dividends werq returned by Diamond Cutter and Race Call. Jazz Boy was first out but soon gave way to Colleen Gain, who with Hunter's Morn led into the straight. Diamond Cutter drew out and beat Race Call, who was a neck in front of Jazz Boy, with Taro fourth, followed by a bunch. : Corroboree was a firm favourite for the concluding event but after being one of the first into the straight he was beaten out of .a, place. Tlie winner was Tractile, who beat the little fancied Kentucky Song by a short length. Aube, Tractile and Kentucky' Song set the early pace with Corroboree and Le Grand next.
