FOOTBALLERS OF OLD
(By Air Mail—Special to Daily News.)
BEARDED GIANTS OF SEVENTIES. CHANGE IN MASCULINE fashion.
JLiOIiaon, marcn c*o. An .old photograph of the first Scottish Rugby fifteen ever enrolled; which played a drawn game against • England in 1879, reveals an impressively sturdy lot of stern and wiid Galedofiians. There , is no mistaking the fine stamp of their physique, great hefty fellows everyone of them, and ever so formidable m facial aspect. ■ This. may be partiy due to then sensational fact, viewed with modern ey^, that two members of the team are bearded heroes, and only five or six of the whole fifteen lack moustaches. One o£ the bearded men is a giant who looks as though he would turn the scale at a good sixteen stone. There were no beards on the green at Murrayfield last Saturday. So far has masculine fashion travelled in sport m 58 years. But that is not the only or_ most significant changes. Our inteniationals to-day are noticeably lighter men and look -distinctly more fragile.
