Customs Returns Increase.
Collection by the Customs Department at New Plymouth during April in all cases showed an increase on the returns for last year. Customs duties collected amounted to £8116 17s 9d, compared with £7605 6s ld, an increase of £511 11s 8d. At £3636 11s 7d the saies tax was £804 2s 5d more than for the same month last year. Excise duty amounted to £278 17s 6d, an increase of £37 7s 3d. The largest increase was that of the petrol tax, which at £5630 10s 6d was £1054 ' 13s 6d more than for April, 1936.
