QUOTA OF 400, CCO TONS OBTAINED. NEGOTIATIONS AT CONFERENCE.
London, April 29. , The Australian and Queensland delegates are jubilant at the outcome of the sugar negotiations. Australia's quota is 400,000 long tons and is considered one of the best obtained. The conference agreement is unlikely to be signed before Tuesday. Mr. Forgan Smith, Premier of Queensland, told the Associated Press that as a result of last night's meeting it could be said that an agreement would probably be signed next week, The final document was not yet drafted. Australia secured the figure at which she aimed. The agreement would begin on January 9 but did not apply to sugar exported from Queensland before that date. Coincident with the agreement there would be an undertaking to continue existing preferences. The agreement
would do much to stabilise the industry, The Associated Press understands that in addition to the 400,000 tons which it is believed is the fixed figure, Australia will proportionately share in ahy extension of consignments to the British markets. Mr. R. G. Casey, Commonwealth treasurer, said that the Australian delegates worked well together throughout the conference and were regarded as one of the strongest groups present. Mr. Casey feels that Australia has every reason to be satisfied when the agreement was published. The delegates had to "bite a few ears," but this proved effective.
