IMMIGRANT TO NEW ZEALAND. IMPOSITION ON THE COUNTRY.
Wellington, April 30. Described by the police as one of _ the tyoe of men who came from Britain frequently with the idea that they could impose on the people of New Zealand, John : Alexan " w Campbell Creight, aged 27 years, cliemist, pleaded guilty to charges of faLse pretences involving a total of £36. Creighton urged that he was not a criminal and claimed that all the offences occurred in a few days while he was drinking heavily. He said he had been working for a construction company with a pick and shovel. The magistrate: "How long? For an hour?" Creighton: "No. For a fortnight." A sentence of six months' hard labour was imposed on one charge and Creighton was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months on the others.
