PROGRESS IN ELIMINATION. ' MAJORITY BY OVERBR1DGES.
Wellington, April 30. An outline of the progress made in connection With the elimination of dangefous railway crossings was given by the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Transport, in an .intervlew to-day. Of the 250 selected for elimination on main highways, he said, nine had been completed, 5S contracts had been let and the work was in hand,1 two tenders had been called and the proposals were ready for the calling of 10 more. A total of 63 proposals were in the course of preparation and surveys and foundation lnvestigations were in hand for 45, a tdtal of 193. In 126 cases elimination was by overbridges, in 50 by highway deviation and in 17 by subway. This progress must be regafded as higlily satisfactory,' considering the high pressure at which the offlcers under his control were working, said the Minister.
