Attempted Fraud Alleged. Lionel George Hood appeared before Mr. J. A. Haswell, J.P., in the Patea Court on Tuesday on a charge of intending to defraud Douglas Root, a Patea storekeeper, by falsely representing that a cheque drawn on the Union Bank of Australasia at Auckland was good and valid. He was remanded to appear at Wanganui on May 5. Ararata Plng-Fong. A ping-pong evening at the Ararata hall was well attended, singles matches and doubles being played. Mr. F. Cox won the singles and Messrs. F. and D. Cox the doubles. Awatuna Hall. A successful afternoon was held in the Awatuna hall on Tuesday to raise funds for new curtains for the hall and for a mirror for the women's dressing room. The hostesses were Mesdames Niccolls, "edgley, Lind and Corbett. Winners of jvelty competitions were Mesdames Joyd, Bailey and Brandt and Misses Kathleen Coxhead and Myrtle Coxhead. Songs were sung by Mrs. Scott and Miss M. Duckett played the accompaniments. Mrs. Davison, president of the branch of the Women's Division, took the opportunity to present to Miss Myrtle Coxhead, whose marriage will take place shortly, a case of knives. These were given from the Women's Division as a token of their i esteem and with good wishes for Miss Coxhead's future. Mrs. Boyd also presented Miss Coxhead with a bouquet. Afternoon tea was served. A good sum was raised. Civil Claims at Hawera. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in a civil claim by the New Zealand Lqan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd. against L. B. Nicholson for £29 2s (costs £4 2s 6d) in the Hawera Magistrate's Court yesterday. On a judgment summons F. Leach was ordered to pay A. B. Bulmer £2, in default two days' imprisonment. I Hotel Hours. "Tourists resent being herded back into hotels at certain hours to eat," remarked Mr. L. A. Ablett at the meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce last night. during a discussion on the question of hotel and Sunday trading restrjctions. He pointed out that exCept for the application of the 40-hour week much of the legislation that was objected to was brought in prior to the advent of the Labour Government. In view i of this fact he considered that the many complaints heard could not be put down i-to political propaganda. Poultry Board Member. A unanimous decision to vote for Mr. A. J. Severn, Lower Hutt, as Wellington member of the New Zealand _ Poultry Board, was made at a meeting of the Hawera branch of the New Zealand Poultry Prpducers' Federation last night. New Zealand Manufactures. A display of New' Zealand manufactures will form an exhibit at the South Taranaki winter show. The Auckland Manufacturers' Association has given a prize of £5, and several Hawera firrns have signified their intention of entering.
