Instruction for Butchers.
Efforts are to be made by the Dominion Council of Master Butchers’ Associations of New Zealand to have classes instituted for instruction of boys and youths engaged in the meat industry. A decision to this effect was reached at the annual conference of the council at Christchurch. The council’s idea is to issue a diploma to those, who become proficient tradesmen. The council also decided to consider establishing a master butcher’s certificate or diploma to be granted to applicants who are members of butchers’ associations, are of good repute and can prove that they are employing approved principles and up-to-date hygienic methods in the conduct of their business. Solar Activity.
The sun is in a very active condition at present. Observations made at an Auckland observatory on Thursday revealed 46 individual sun spots, divided roughly into four groups, two groups being north of the solar equator and two in the southern hemisphere. The largest group had a penumbral spread of 22,000 miles, while its principal spot had a diameter of 10,000 miles. Alongside this solar vortex the earth would be a small object. Other sun spots attained diameters of 9000, 5000, 4000 and 3000 miles, while the six attendant penumbral systems attained diameters ranging from 13,500 miles to 5000 miles.
