BUTTER SOLD TO U.S.A.
AUCKLAND TRANSACTIONS SALES REPORTED AT Is PER LB. LIMITED NEW YORK MARKET. DEMAND APPARENTLY SEASONAL. I. ■ . By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Within the past few days inquiries have been received from New York buyers of butter by exporters in New Zealand. It is understood that sales have been made at about Is per lb f.0.b., the* total amount which has changed hands being between 1000 and 2000 boxes. The first shipment will be made by the steamer Canadian Conqueror, which will leave Auckland for New York on Monday.
The present price at New York is about 35 cents per lb but there is an import duty of 14 cents. Stocks at New-York are fairly heavy and it is doubtful whether there will be much opening for New Zealand butter.
The demand from New York is a seasonal one, corresponding with the approach of the northern winter. An exporter said this morning that exploitation of the American market was only possible in certain circumstances, dependent on the position of the home supplies, America having a tariff wall of seven cents per pound on New Zealand butter. The present New York quotation was equivalent to llid per lb.
