The g H professional prohibitionist is, of course, always || g with us, but admittedly many men and women g H believed prohibition to be a practical possibility, J g and voted for it even at the prospect of g g personal sacrifice. g g The complete breakdown of prohibition in every g g one of the countries in which it has been tried, g § and its consequent repeal, has proved beyond g g all possible doubt that total abstinence by g g compulsion is not only impossible of attainment § ii but is productive of many strange and terrible g g reactions. The failure of prohibition, however, g g need not discourage those genuinely interested g § in the advancement of temperance—rather the g g defeat of prohibition is a victory for temperance. g EE iEE g It is significant that those nations which give g little or no thought to the prohibition idea have g § .cultivated a strong healthy temperance sentiment, g =2 a solid national public opinion—the best § — SSS g regulator of the use of any of nature’s gifts. • g g Once the prohibition fetish is discarded, the || g way is clear for progress along the path of true g H temperance. New Zealand, although a small g g country, holds a proud place among the nations, H g , and an overwhelming vote for Continuance would g § indicate "plainly for all the world to see, that H H New Zealand is sound at heart, sturdily self- § g reliant and intends to continue to progress in g § sobriety, under the flag of freedom. g EE “Temperance means moderation, and when EE S you say that a country has a temperate climate, SE EE you mean that it' has an enjoyable climdte, EE Es not that it has no climate at all.” E™ SS Z -MAX O'RELL. sE
