POPULAR CONCERT

RECORD PEMBROKE ATTENDANCE. GOOD SUPPORT FOR CARNIVAL. An outstanding success was scored by the committee for the south and west queen, Miss E. Richardson, with a concert and dance in the Pembroke Road Hall on Wednesday night. There was a record attendance. The queen was presented with a bouquet by Miss Marjorie Hancock. The business queen, Miss Jean Macßae, Stratford, and the north and east queen, Miss M. Tuck, were also present. A total of £25 was taken at the door for the winter show building fund. The programme was a splendid one, both in variety and in quality. Many of the performers were visitors, parties having come from Eltham and Stratford. Items were given by Mrs. Mcßeth (songs), Miss Spencer, Eltham (recitation), Mr. F. Silver (songs), Mr. D. Silver (songs), Mrs. Crabbe (songs), Mr. Casey (songs), Misse J. Macßae, D. Cannon and M. Lawrence (dances), Miss Richardson (songs), Miss E. Longstaff (recitation), Mrs. Masters (songs)., Miss Jean Evans (recitation), and Miss M. Brown (songs). A one-act play was presented by Misses Belcher, Raynor (2), Lorna Waite and Kelly. For the dance which followed Mr. H. W. Hancock was master of ceremonies and Silver’s Sunbeams supplied the music. BRIGHT WRESTLING PROMISED. STRATFORD BOUT TO-MORROW. One of the most interesting of the wrestlers competing in New Zealand under the Dominion Union’s control is Tony Catalino, who is to meet “Lofty” Blomfield at Stratford to-morrow night. Catalino was born in America 35 years ago of Spanish-Italian parents, and is a. particularly handsome physical specimen. He commenced wrestling while serving in the American Navy towards the end of the Great War. After peace had been signed he left the service and became a professional wrestler, immediately making great progress in the sport. He proved his quality so well that he was given title bouts with Browning and Londos and he has also been matched with men like Henri dt. Glane and “Strangler” Lewis. In 1926 he showed his versatility by boxing six rounds with Jack Dempsey while the latter was on a “barnstorming” tour prior to meeting Tunney in the bout in which he lost the title.

Since his return from America, Blomfield has proved that he is a wrestler of exceptional quality and he is well on the way to usurping in the public’s favour the place previously occupied by George Walker. He has weight, strength and skill, three of the main essentials in a wrestler’s equipment, and his opponents are finding him increasingly difficult to handle. He has beaten all the visiting professionals except Earl McCready, and has proved a very tough proposition for the Canadian. His match with the fiery Catalino should make great ment. GENERAL ITEMS. Democrat at Uruti. Mr. C. R. Finnerty, Democrat candidate for Stratford, addressed 24 electors at Uruti on Wednesday night. Mr. R. Larson was chairman. Thanks were given the speake. on the motion of Messrs. Bell and'Gray. Sports Day Postponed. After stalls had been set. up and a few children’s events run, rain set in at Toko yesterday and caused the postponement of the sports day that was arranged to be held at the Toko domain to swell the funds of the north and east queen, Miss Mavis Tuck. Even so a small amount was taken at the stalls before the fixture was abandoned and the dance was held last night. The same programme and arrangements will hold good for next Thursday to which day the event was postponed. On Wrong Side of Road. Failure to keep his motor-cycle to the left on the Tututawa-Puniwhakau Road on October 11, to which he pleaded guilty, cost John D. W. Raine, clergyman at Douglas, 10s, with costs 10s, at the Stratford Police Court yesterday. His cycle collided head-on with a lorry driven by Mr. F. Reader, Douglas, said Sergeant C. M. Annis, who considered the case was not one for a heavy penalty as little damage was done.
