SECOND BIRTHDAY PARTY
TAIPOROHENUI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
A concert followed by a fireworks display and dance, during which the cake was cut with due ceremony, marked the second anniversary of the Taiporohenui Maori Women’s Institute at the Kautu-ki-te-rangi meeting-house on Tuesday night. There was a large attendance of institute members from other branches and of Hawera visitors. . Mrs. Scotty Panenui, president of the institute, welcomed the visitors, and the institute song was sung by the whole gathering to the accompaniment of the Taiporohenui orchestra. The concert programme was: Double short poi, institute members; solo, Miss Kitty Reid; action song, institute girls; sailor s hornpipe, Miss Jean McAsey; canoe poi, institute members; action song, E. Parera; duet, Misses E. Govenor and S. Epai; double long poi, members; solo, Mrs. Toka; play, Hesekiah Heeps, Mrs. Fowler and Mrs. Hurley, members of Te Roti branch; duet, Mr.- and Mrs. R. S. Allwright; haka, institute members; finale, Poatarau members. The accompanists were Mesdames Attrill and W. Snowsill. After supper the birthday cake, made and iced by Mrs. W. Adams, was wheeled out and its two candles were lit by Mrs. Valentine, the oldest member, and Miss Moki Govenor, the youngest member, blew them out. Miss Panenui then cut the cake' and was presented with a bouquet by Miss K. Reid. Mr. J. E. Campbell, Mayor of Hawera, thanked members for the invitation to be present for the second birthday party and cong: Mated the institute on its work. Good wishes were also extended by I T esdames McAsey (Taranaki Federation and Te Roti branch), Tombleson (Oharwe), F. Thomson (Okaiawa Maori), Shaw (Turi-town), Howell (Nonnanby), Minhinnick (Matariki Maori), Tidswell (Tawhiti) and Evans (Turuturu). _ Mrs. N. Governor, secretary of the Taiporohenui institute, was presented with a bouquet by Mrs. M. R. Jones on behalf of members for her ■ work, and Mrs. Campbell was also presented with a bouquet by Miss Reid. Supper was served by institute members and the dance continued to music r’lyed by Mrs. Attrill. Mr. S. Panenui was master of ceremonies. A tap dance exhibition was given by Miss Graham and community singing was led by Mr. Allwright.
