SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS

KAPONGA COMMITTEE MEETING. —4 Hearting to the Kaponga school committee on Monday evening the headmaster, Mr. A. T. Honore, said the roll number was 97 and the average attendance for October was 91.3. Bad weather towards the end of the month spoiled the attendance. The health of the children, however, was generally good. The windows in the infant room had been re-hung but a number in the senior room required attention, Mr. Honore said. Plumbing fixtures on the exterior v ere in need of attention. Seasonal work was being done in the school garden, the children, especially those of the middle division, being very enthusiastic. Twenty young kowhai trees had been added to the native trees section, as well as three karakas given by June Thurston. The woodwork class boys renovated the schopl barrow. The agricultural officer, Mr. R. Syme, paid a visit to the school towards the end of October. In connection with the children’s clubs (boys and girls’ clubs) Mr. Honore said the school had six entries in the gardening section, one in root-growing and seven in calf-rearing. Cricket had commenced and Kaponga had played two games against the Mangatoki school, losing the first and winning the second. A letter was received from the Kaponga Town Board drawing attention to rain water piping at the school being fed into the board’s sewers. The letter pointed out that this action was against the by-laws and asked that it be rectified at an early date. The matter was referred to the Taranaki Education Board for action. ‘ Advice was received from the Taranaki Education Board that the rehanging of a number of the windows and the repairing of leaks in the school residence roof was receiving attention.. In connection with the plumbing fixtures mentioned in the headmaster’s report it was decided to refer the matter to the Education Board for attention. It was decided to purchase an apparatus for water-heating purposes. Messrs. Brewer and Taylforth, visiting committee for October, reported the grounds in first-class order. Messrs. Gordge and Norgate were appointed a visiting committee for November. ' Mr. K Taylforth reported 36 Kaponga pupils on the dental clinic roll. All had now received treatment. , . The chairman, Mr. C. H. Brewer, presided, and there were present Messrs. H. C. Norgate, C. N. Gordge and J. Taylforth. Flower Show Preparations. At the last meeting . .of the executive of St. Mark’s Horticultural'Society it was decided to proceed with the printing of the amended schedules. The secretary was instructed tb have membership cards prepared &nd to prepare the membership roll. In connection with the school section an effort is to be made to procure entries from schools nearby. In. the absence of the president, the Rev. A.,J* Farnell, Mr. R. D. Dagg, vice-president, occupied the chair, and the following members were present: Mesdames Brewer and Dagg, Messrs. Wells, Brisco, Webb, Gordge and Corder.
