HAWERA SWIMMING

PROSPECTS FOR THE SEASON. STRONG WATER POLO TEAM. (By “Hunch.”) Weather permitting, Friday night will mark the beginning of a promising swimming season at Hawera. The club has started well by having a larger attendance than usual at the annual meeting. A marked spirit of interest and enthusiasm is noticeable, especially among the younger swimmers. Among the new members are R. Clayton, ex-Fitzroy water polo and surf man, and Paddy Ryan, well known Lyall Bay beltman. Ryan is an old member of the club and is well known in Taranaki swimming circles while Clayton has taken an active part in both swimming and surf work. Polo enthusiasts will go into training almost immediately for, if the proposed visit of the Australian team comes off, the club hopes to get as many members as possible in the Taranaki team. The polo selector has an unenviable task in front of him this season. Many of last year’s junior players will be much improved and with the addition of Ryan and Clayton, “Hunch” considers that, as with the exception of Sam Gorman, all of last year’s members of the A team are available, the selector will be faced with about 15 players all of about the same standard. . The committee, it is understood, has a scheme in hand for the revision of conditions for all cup races. This is being done with the object of evening the competitions and the probable result will be that much more interest will be taken in the events. The club is making a special effort this year to cater for school swimmers and the headmasters of various schools, are to be asked to help the club officials in this respect. The club has several new and promising women swimmers and should be able to find as good a wsmen’s polo team as last year. • J. Hayman, who has been keeping fit by boxing throughout the winter, will be a hard man to beat over any distance this season, while Les. George, . last year's senior cup winner, who incidentally is the keenest and most consistent swimmer in the club, will, if he trains as hard as last year, show improvement. R. Clarke and- I. Jobson will probably be on the back mark in the sprints, and Paddy and Bert Ryan will be scratch men in the distance races. Last year’s intermediates, Hopcroft, McGlashan, Chadwick, Oliver and Butchart, should all show an improvement on last season. Gordon Beaveh will make a very popular club captain, a position in the club which he has earned by hard and regular training. Both Peggy Robertson and Betty Smith should go a long way in championship swimming this year, and with Eileen Kelsen and Kath. Donald will give the club four really fast girl swimmers. Gwen. Barnard, Hermione Evans and Jessie Beamish are also three promising members. Lucy Hannah, however, whose performances at the championships last year were so outstanding, - is the most promising girl swimmer on hand at present. Daphne Kelsen should have no difficulty in keeping up her reputation for diving. This year’s club nights will be on Fridays as usual. MT. EGMONT ALPINE CLUB. VISIT BY AN ENGLISH EXPERT. A meeting of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club committee was held on Tuesday night, Mr. D. C. Ryan presiding over a good attendance. In connection with the club ski sports to be held at the week-end invitations to compete will be sent to the otlier fxaranaki clubs. Arrangements are bejing made for a party to occupy the ■Syme Hut for the week-end, with preference to competitors. Other members will make the trip under the leadership of Mr. C. Dingle. In reply to correspondence from the secretary of the New Zealand Ski Council with reference to the proposed visit next winter of Mr. C. Wyatt, English ski expert, it was decided to indicate that the club would be pleased to co-operate in any way possible. The tentative arrangements are for Mr. Wyatt to put in a short period with the Taranaki clubs in September next. Quotations were received for the club badge and these were' left in the hands of a sub-committee.
