CARELESS DRIVING

WORK FOR AN INSPECTOR? DISCUSSION BY MOTORISTS. A suggestion that an inspector with a roving commission should be appointed by the combined North and South Taranaki Automobile Associations to patrol the Taranaki roads and given power to prosecute offending motorists was made by Mr. R. R. Tyrer at a meeting of Stratford members of the Automobile Association (South Taranaki) last night. The matter was fully discussed by the meeting, and there were several conflicting opinions. It was decided to bring the suggestion before the notice of the general executive. Every day there were examples of shockingly bad driving, said Mr. Tyrer. He had himself seen motorists speeding across dangerous intersections, passing others at intersections and near the crest of hills, and cutting-in. An inspector could patrol the roads in a private car and could follow offenders in a way no other officer of the association or any member could. , Was that not trespassing on the work of the police? asked Mr. Kerswill. It seemed to be rather the field of the Government than of the association. The association could easily get itself disliked over the matter. It seemed rather a matter for the police, agreed Mr. Rawles. Perhaps the association could endeavour to interest the police in the matter. Cases of glaring headlights were still very serious and frequent, said Mr. Tyrer. The opinion that one of the association’s two servicemen should be stationed at Stratford was expressed by the chairman, Mr. J. C. Allen. Of the association's 2000 members 420 were in the Stratford district, he said; it was a fair proportion. The secretary, Mr. Carter, pointed out that one of the patrol men called at Stratford at least four times a week. Messrs. B. Rawles, J. C. Allen, L. J Furrie, N. H. Moss, W. E. Wiluams, R. R. Knewstubb and A. O. Hugo were elected a local committee to deal with any matters concerning the Stratford district. Mr. Allen was elected chairman, Messrs. Allen, Rawles, Carter and Moss were elected to atend the general branch executive as representatives of the Stratford agency. There were present Messrs. J. C. Allen (chairman/, N. H. Moss, W. E. Williams, A. Rawles, R. R. Knewstubb, R. R. Curtis, R. R. Tyrer, J. Kerswill, L. J. Furrie, A. O. Hugo and G. A. Carter (secretary). * PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. C. F. Donald, of the Union Bank of Australia, Stratford, left on Wednesday morning on transfer to the head office, Wellington. Mr. Lindsay McCluggage, who has been spending his leave with his mother, Mrs. M. McCluggage, Stratford, left for Auckland by train on Wednesday night on his return to Siam, where he is en-gr—-i in mining engineering. The Hon. R. Masters, accompanied by his secretary, Mr. K. Slight, returned Wellington yesterday.
