BOWLS ABANDONED
RAIN STOPS TOURNAMENT PLAY.
WEST END DRAWS FOR TROPHIES.
Donning their flannels and blazers, New Plymouth bowlers looked at the sky yesterday morning and had the temerity to hope that the clouds and the rain were only delaying the advent of a spring day. Labour Day tournaments had been arranged by all the clubs except Fitzroy and Fire Brigade, which must have possessed a meteorological prescience, but in no case did the pairs contests progress beyond the first game and morning tea. At West End, however, the players went one better. Determined not to be entirely disappointed by the weather ; they played one game of a full rink competition for the gold bowls, had morning tea—and drew to decide the holders of the bowls. The winners were members of L. H. Honeyfield’s rink, who will keep the trophies until they are beaten in a challenge match. The rain was just as unrelenting at Waitara, where a progressive pairs tournament was abandoned after the first game.
