GOLF AT HAWERA

LABOUR DAY TOURNEY DEFEAT OF SUTHERLAND FAILURE OF O’CALLAGHAN QUALIFIES IN SECOND 16 H. P. WILLS PLAYING WELL The annual Labour Day golf tournament conducted by the Hawera Golf Club and played on its links for the South Taranaki championship was begun on Saturday and continued yesterday. More than 100 competitors from all parts of Taranaki and Wanganui are taking part. As a result of match play yesterday H. P. Wills (Eltham), will meet S. Lovell (Inglewood) and J. Tarrant (Hawera) will meet J. Stewart (Wellington) in the semi-finals of the championship. Four events are being staged, as well as the usual bogey and medal competitions. The weather,- both on " Saturday and yesterday, was not pleasant, showers on Saturday resulting in high qualifying scores. Yesterday a heavy blustery wind blew without ceasing and caused difficulty to even the most experienced. One of the sensations of the qualifying round was the failure of W. A. O’Callaghan to qualify in the championship. He tied with four others for last place, with an 83, but on the count back he lost the last place. O’Callaghan is the veteran of the tournament, and he first won the club’s senior championship in 1905. Last year, in the Labour Day tournament, he went through to the final, where H. P. Wills defeated him. He has not shown his usual form this season, and in the first round of the Fairfield handicap yesterday he had difficulty in beating A. Roots, the game going to the 21st. One of the sternest fights in the championship first round was put up by the Taranaki champion, D. V. Sutherland, against J. Tarrant. With five holes to play Tarrant was 4 up, playing splendid golf. Then Sutherland set" to work and, reeling off 4,3, 4,4, 5, he squared the match on the 18th. At the 19th Sutherland pushed his tee shot, out and played a provisional ball. He found the first ball, however, and pitched up to within ten feet of the pin. He could riot sink his putt and Tarrant, who chipped up to within five feet, took an exciting match. STEWART SURPRISES. Something of a surprise was caused by the defeat of N. P. Green, the Stratford stalwart, by Stewart, formerly of Eltham and now of Wellington. Square on the 18th, the match looked to be over from the 19th tee, where Green duffed his tee shot just across the creek. He recovered well, however, and the hole was halved in fours. At trie 20th both had good drives, but Stewart’s accuracy was superior and he won the hole for the match. Other first round matches saw Simpson scoring consistent figures all the way to annihilate' Linn. Whitehead was too accurate for Ryan, whose putting was at fault, and he finished on the 18th with a chip of 20 yards into the hole, scoring well on bogey. “Tommy” Gibson, the tiny Eltham prodigy, could not handle the wind with his usual skill and H. P. Wills, the soul of easy confidence and geniality, had little trouble with Jones. In topping the qualifying round list Wills braved the terrors pf the rain and wind in fine style and under the conditions his card was really excellent. He dropped strokes at the 7th, 11th and 14th, scoring par figures at every other hole. His card was:— Out: 3 5 5 4 3.4 5 5 4—38. In: 3 5 -3 4 5 3.4 5 5—37—75. Par for the course is 72. Wills, finest characteristic, steadiness, was chiefly responsible for his second round defeat of Whitehead by 3 and 2. Wills went round in 77 and Whitehead in 78, both coming back in 37. Whitehead started off with wins on the Ist and 2nd, but Wills, with birdies on the 3rd and 7th, soon squared the match and took the lead. Whitehead made an error on the 12th, where both were on the green in one. Wills took three putts, but even then Whitehead could not halve, taking a five. To a certain extent, however, Whitehead was unfortunate, for he played essentially steady golf over the two days, and. against a less resolute player than Wills he would probably have won out. The feature of the Sturrock-Lovell battle was a perfect niblick pitch into the 14th hole by Lovell when Sturrock laid a perfect stymie. Sturrock was one down at the, turn and Lovell then proceeded to collect the next three holes, holing a long putt on the 11th. At the 14th Sturrock’s putt rimmed the cup and stymied Lovell, whose ball was a foot away. The Inglewood man took his niblick and with a perfect shot dropped the ball in the hole. The approximate rounds were 80 ; to Lovell and 84 to Sturrock. Tarrant and Simpson both played below form, but Tarrant was steadier and good putting saved him after troublesome shots in the fairway. Tarrant was 4 up at the turn, and the lead was too great for Simpson to overcome.. QUALIFYING ROUND. The qualifiers for the championship and Fairfield handicap were decided on the gross score and for the other handicaps on the nett score. Consequently several low markers failed to gain a place in any 16. The qualifiers were:— Championship. H. P. Wills (Eltham) 75. H. Simpson (Hawera), J. Stewart (Eltham) 76. S. Lovell (Inglewood), R. S. Ward (Hawera) 78. T. Gibson (Eltham), J. Tarrant (Hawera) 79. ■ ' H. G. Whitehead, D. C. Ryan (Hawera) 80. D. •V. Sutherland (Inglewood), D. Thompson (Eltham), C. Sturrock (Hawera) 81. W. G.
