NORTH TARANAKI TITLE

GOLF AT FITZROY LINKS

MATCHES PLAYED IN HIGH WIND.

S. CLARK HEADS THE QUALIFIERS.

The annual tournament of the Fitzroy Golf Club, which opened on Saturday, attracted more than 50 entries, including players from the New Plymouth, Tarurutangi and Mar.akorihi clubs. The qualifying round was played on Saturday and the first two rounds of match play yesterday. The first 16 qualifiers compete for the North Taranaki amateur championship and the next 32 in group handicaps.

S. Clark, Fitzroy, headed the qualifiers with a well-played 76, two strokes ahead of L. R. Curtis and R. A. Boon. Clark was out in 39 and home in 37. Curtis had a great chance when he reached the turn in 36, but he dropped strokes on the inward journey. The conditions were ideal on Saturday, but yesterday a high wind made play difficult at times. The semi-finals of the championships will be played this morning and the final in the afternoon. All the group handicap finals will be played this morning. Mr. H. S. Wagstaff was secretary and starter. All the second round championship games were well contested. The lefthanded youth, S. Holden, created a mild surprise by defeating Clark. He was one up at the turn but Clark squared matters with a fine three at the 12th. Holden, however, won the next with three and took the 15th. and 16th. to win 3 and 2. He was out in 39 and back in 40. C. H. Strombom was slow to settle down against R. H. Boon, who was 3 up after playing the ninth. Strombom then took the 10th. and 11th. but dropped the 12th. Boon was dormy when he won the 15th but Strombom, placing a grand second inches from the pin, won the next. He had a great chance at the 17th but took three putts, enabling Boon to halve the hole and win the game 2 and 1.

The golf in the Curtis-Street game was not good. Street, was 1 up at the turn but Curtis squared the match at ttie 11th. Curtis was astray with his tee shot at the short 13th and Street led again. Curtis should have squared the game at the 15th b- t Street laid him a stymie. However, he won the 16th. but had to go to the 19th. to win. Young Jim Jeffries made a game fight against a more experienced player, T. A. Thomson. The first four holes were halved but Thomson won three of (the next four. Jeffries took the ninth and was two down at the t irn. Jeffries pulled another hole back at the 10th, but a lapse on the green at the 14tl saw Thomson 2 up again. Jeffries won the next and halved the 16th., but failed to match Thomson’s four at the 17th, where the game was over. In the semi-finals Holden will play Thomson and Curtis will meet Boon.
