TRY ON SAME SPOT
.1905 INCIDENT RECALLED DEAN’S DISPUTED SCORE ALL BLACKS BEGIN WELL DESCRIPTION OF MATCH By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. London, Oct. 26. Reid’s try in the AU Blacks’ match with Cardiff was at the same spot as the famous incident of R. G. Dean’s disputed try in the international match between Wales and New Zealand in 1905, when New Zealand lost the only match of the tour because, it was claimed, the referee was not well enough up with the game to see the touch-down, which was near the posts. The teams were:— All Blacks. Full-back: Gilbert. Three-quarters: Ball, Oliver, Mitchell. Five-eighths: Caughey, Griffiths. Half-back: Sadler. Forwards: Adkins, Hadley, Lambourn, McLean, King, Reid, Manchester, Mahoney. Cardiff. Full-back: Stone. Three-quarters: Bassett, Boon, Edwards, Jones. Stand-off: J. E. Bowcott. Scrum-half: H. M. Bowcott. Forwards: Osmond, Egan, Bale, N. Rees, H. Rees, Spence, Watkins, Williams. The New Zealanders, packing lower than previously, hooked the ball from the first scrum, enabling them to score within a minute. Caughey kicked high and went over from a scramble on the line, but Gilbert failed to convert with an easy kick. Caughey, cutting through and running 30 yards, enabled a spectacular try to be scored by Mitchell, who raced round the opposition. Gilbert did not convert. J. Bowcott and Jones were responsible for fine individual efforts for Cardiff, but they were fruitless. The All Blacks continued to give a spectacular display, the forwards forcing the game. Ball side-stepped his opponents well and ran 40 yards. The New Zealanders were awarded a penalty but Gilbert failed with the kick. Then Caughey and Ball raced through and Caughey scored after a great run. Gilbert converted and New Zealand led by 11 points to none. Later Gilbert kicked a fine field goal from near halfway, making the score at half-time New Zealand 15 Cardiff 0 The All Blacks were now thoroughly in their stride and were greatly applauded on the resumption after halftime for pretty reverse passing and backing up. Cardiff generally was poor. H. Bowcott and Edwards dropped many passes, but Boon initiated a fine movement in which the forwards handled and sent in to Osmond for a try which Boon converted. Thereafter Cardiff improved and more severely tested the visitors. Jones was prominent in many fine runs which pierced the defence.. The last try came when Reid secured from the loose and went over the line. Gilbert goaled. The final score was: 7 New Zealand 20 Cardiff 5 UNMISTAKEABEY BETTER NEW ZEALANDERS’ SUPREMACY. OPINIONS OF THE WELSH CRITICS. Rec. 6.30 p.m. London, Oct. 26. Llanelly and Cardiff critics agree on the New Zealanders’ unmistakeable supremacy. The Observer declares that their finish and judgment were superior to that previously exhibited. The Sunday Times says the All Blacks’ brilliance bewildered their opponents and the Sunday Despatch compliments Caughey and Griffiths, whose unorthodoxy often bluffed the way through the Cardiff pack. / , The All Blacks were guests at a Mayoral banquet at the Cardiff municipal buildings, whi-’h were floodlit in honour of the occasion. The team received many messages of congratulation on its improvement. The Scottish Rugby Union after the international match against the All Blacks is arranging a dinner at which it will entertain, in addition to the teams, the survivors of the Scottish team which played against New Zealand in 1905, numbering 12., They include Mr. P. Munro, M.P., and the former Governor of Khartoum, Sir Louis Greig. Several All Blacks are making an effort to reduce their weight, which is preventing them from striking form. They are undergoing a strict diet, cutting out beer, pastry, potatoes and sweets. Collins weighs more than 16 stone and Mahoney is a stone overweight. Many are unable to wear shirts and collars brought from New Zealand.
