Owing to the large number of entries received f in the past for the annual Christmas number short story competition the Taranaki Daily News has decided to extend the competitive scope this year, and invites entries from readers for the following competitions. Short Story. First Prize £3 3 0 Second Prize £2 2 0 Consolation prizes of £1 Is for each short story, not a prizewinner, accepted for publication. Stories, which must not previously have appeared in print, should be not more than 3000 words in length, or about three columns of the Daily News. One-Act Playlet. First Prize £3 3 0 Second Prize £2 2 0 This special class has been introduced owing to the unprecedented interest in drama manifested throughout Taranaki during the past year. Conditions same as for short story. Amateur Photography. First Prize £1 1 0 Second Prize 10 6 Reproduction fees of 5/- each will be paid for all photographs, not prize winners, accepted for publication. This competition is open only to amateurs. Preference will be given to Taranaki scenic or natural history studies, and to photographs with distinct light and shade contrasts, which are preferable for reproduction purposes. Cliristmas Dinner. Menu of what is considered the best Christmas dinner for five people at j cost of not more than 2s a head. Assumption to be that all articles on the menu are purchased at current Taranaki market rates. Special judges to be appointed and announced later. First Prize 10/-. Second Prize 5/-. In addition 1/- will be paid for all entries, not prizewinners, accepted for publication. Young People’s Competition. Story or essay, “A Holiday In Taranaki.” Drawing or painting, any subject. Entries must be the original work of the competitors, and a certificate to that effect forwarded with entries by parents or teacher. Two classes, senior (14 to 18 years) and junior (under 14 years). Competitors to state their ages when forwarding entries. Book prizes offered for first in each section and each class. The decision of the Editor in all competitions shall be final. MSS should, if possible, be typewritten and entries should be forwarded to the Editor, Taranaki Daily News, Box 119, New Plymouth. The package should be flat and clearly marked “Christmas Competition.” The last folio of MSS should hear the name and address of the competitor. Stamps must be enclosed if the competitor desires the return of MSS. Entries for all competitions close at midnight on Saturday, November 30. Entries must be either delivered or in the post by that time if they are to receive consideration.
