BOWLING OPENINGS

BIG PARITUTU CLUB GATHERING.

MANY NEW MEMBERS REPORTED.

Many visitors and club members attended the annual opening of the Paritutu Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon when after steady rain in the morning the weather cleared unexpectedly to enable a match to be played between teams representing the president and vice-president. The president won by 158 to 126. ®

The president, Mr. W. Vincent, in extending a general welcome mentioned that there were 20 new members. The greens were looking very well, he said, considering that up till three weeks ago club members themselves had maintained them. Credit was due to the new greenwarden, Mr. J. Bland, who had spent a great deal of time on the greens. Mr. Vincent read a letter from the club patron, the Hon. S. G. Smith, wishing the club success and expressing regret at his inability to attend owing to the possibility .of Parliament sitting on Saturday morning. At the request of the president the gathering preserved silence for a minute in memory of the late Messrs. J. McCallum and W. Roberts, former members of the club. Mr. J-. Lobb, vice-president of the Taranaki Centre, wished the club a successful season and offered his / congratulations on the fine conditions of the green. Mr. Vincent presented the following club trophies: Pairs championship, W. W. Thomson (skip) and W. Kilpatrick (lead); singles championship and Thomson Cup, S. R. Lovell; junior singles championship, R. B. Hawkins. The green was declared open'for play after Mrs. Vincent had thrown the first jack and Mr. W. W. Bird, in officially opening the green, welcomed the visitors and new members and trusted that the season would be a successful and enjoyable one. He congratulated Messrs. H. I. Chittenden and J. P. Clark on being the winners of the senior and junior championship singles and Messrs. E. Andrews and R. Horsup on winning the junior pairs. He mentioned the great loss the club had suffered in the death of Mr. M. Fahy. Mr. Morey thanked the women for valuable assistance given during the season in taking charge of afternoon tea arrangements. He called on Mrs. Morey to throw the jack and deliver the first bowl. The usual president v. vicepresident match was played, which ended in a draw, each side scoring 76 points.
