COWS ON STREETS
NORMANBY TOWN BOARD DECISION
MILKING ON OWNER’S PROPERTY. The control of the homely cow is one of the problems that frequently concerns town councillors in Taranaki, particularly in those areas where fees are paid for fights of grazing on the streets. At the meeting of the Normanby Town Board on Tuesday a letter was received from a ratepayer complaining that one of the registered cows was a menace to residents. The board apparently took a serious view of the matter, for it decided that the owner’s attention be drawn to the registration rules and decreed that the offending animal be removed from the streets before the end of October. But that was not all. Complaints had been received by the board that residents had in some cases registered cows m the names of other persons. To make that impossible it was decided to amend the rules to provide that in future all cows must be milked on the property of ‘ the registering owner. The board reserved the right to cancel the license of anyone not complying with those conditions and to insist on forfeiture of the registration fee. It was decided to discontinue the practice of monthly registration and to make the fee annual.
The foreman, Mr. E. G. Mcßeth, reported on the work done during the month, which included tarring and patching on Ketemarae Road, and work on the main highway and on the Ohangai and Ketemarae Roads. A clean-up of rubbish took two days. The ranger, Mr. C. Tonga, reported that during the month seven cows, one horse and three sheep were impounded. At the meeting the chairman, Mr. D. Stewart, presided. Messrs. J. T. Young. P. J. Leydon and J. A. Archbold were also present. Mr. T. Evans officially tendered his resignation from the board and the clerk was instructed to call for nominations to fill the vacancy. Meetings of the Domain and Cemetery Boards were also held. The chairman .reported that the Normanby Women’s Institute had held a tree-planting ceremony in the domain, where were planted three trees, a karaka, a whitiwood and a titoki. Members expressed the hope that other trees would be planted in the future.
