Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, opening the Imperial Chemical Industries’ plant for making, petrol from coal at Billingham-on-Tees, which is capable of producing 150,000 tons a year, said: “The nation that can defend itself can use every particle of its influence towards peace. Command of oil is essential to our defence, and it is comforting to know that at a pinch we could manufacture it within our own borders.”
