AN OFFICER TAKING THE OATH IN ABYSSINIA.—His right hand is raised, while his left hand touches the Colours. The oath is as follows: “I swear as a soldier of my Emperor, Haile Selassie, to remain for ever true to him and to Ethiopia. Never to give way in battle, and in war to die for Emperor and country only whilst attacking. I swear this before God on the sacred banner of Ethiopia.”
