WAGES AGREEMENT

WELLINGTON DISTRICT AWARD.

PAY OF GENERAL LABOURERS.

Agreement was reached in the Conciliation Council to-day, when the Wellington district general labourers’ dispute, recently adjourned to allow the parties to consider the proposals put forward, was resumed. The commissioner, Mr. P. Hally, presided. The wages clauses _of the new award will come into operation on November 8 and the other provisions on a date to be fixed by the Arbitration Court.

The wages agreed upon are: Men engaged erecting scaffolding, 2s Id an hour; labourers assisting in the erection or demolition of scaffolding or buildings, Is lOd an hour; tunnel workers and timber men, 2s Id an hour; certified quarry workers, Is Hid an hour; other quarry workers, Is lOd an hour; labourers in charge of measuring, cutting and binding of steel for reinforced concrete, 2d an hbur extra; asphalt and tar workers, 2s an hour.

Overtime is to be paid at time and a quarter for the first three hours and time and a half thereafter, provided that the men who have worked through a full eight-hour day or for four hours on the half-holiday, and who are required to continue working, shall be paid time and a half for the first four hours and double time thereafter.

The clauses relating to holidays contain a provision that work done on Saturday holidays shall be paid for at double time rates. Extra payments are to be made to certain classes of workers at the following rates: Crane dogman, 3d an hour; men working with pneumatic hammers or drills, 2d; men clearing blocked sewers or drains, 2d; men engaged on the demolition of buildings damaged or destroyed by fire, 2d; men engaged on the demolition of old buildings, Id.
