HAWERA

Mrs. W. A. O'Callaghan, who returned from overseas by the Akaroa last week and went to Christchurch for a visit to her father, Mr. Russell, will return to Hawera to-morrow. Miss Peggy Denman, Te Puke, is the guest of Miss Ernestine Rowland. Mrs. A. Grierson, Auckland arrived yesterday to be the guest of her sister-in-law, Mrs. L. J. Bull, for a week or two. Miss K Coleman left last night for Auckland, where she will be Miss Macßeth’s guest at Epsom for a month. Mrs. D. G. Smart wore a floral marocain frock in brown and gold tonings when she was hostess at tea on Monday afternoon. Her sitting-room was gay with vases of ranunculi, iris and orange callendulas. Mesdames SC. Tonks, W. Powdrell, A. Coleman, and Misses B. Watty, C. Tonks, K. Coleman and J. Powdrell were the guests. Mrs. L. R. Hamilton, Manutahi, has Mrs. Wilkins, Auckland, staying with her. Mrs. G. S. Fry’s guest, Mrs. Lane, returned north last week-end. Mrs. R. S. Allwright, who has been spending a holiday at Wellington for the past month, returned home last week.

Afternoon Bridge. Mixed tulips and fascinating and unusual Monk’s Hood lilies were set in the sitting-room of Mrs. H. T. Lovell’s home on Saturday afternoon, when Misses Sheila and Pat Lovell invited a number of friends to bridge. There were five tables m play, Miss Evelyn Buist winning a token for top score, and Miss Jill Hunter a consolation prize. In the dining-room pink rhododendrons, and Judas’ blossom and primulas in cyclamen hues were arranged. A hydrangea blue

impressed matalasse frock, with touches of flame was worn by Miss Sheila Lovell and Miss Pat Lovell’s tri-coloured tartan ninon frock had a petunia coloured sash. Mesdames Colin Garden, N. G. Meuli, C. S. Robb, T. F. McKenzie, H. Jones, E. Hunter (Ararata), N. Douglas (Stratford), and Misses M. Washer M. Hawken, V. Schieb, J. Powdrell, N. Duckworth, A. Kemp, J. Hunter, E. Buist, C. Tonks, K. Coleman, R. Pease, B. Powdrell, and O. Schieb, were among the players present. Flag Bridge. Five tables of flag bridge players were entertained by Miss Gean Robb at her home on Friday night, when flower-laden sprays of cherry blossom in pink and white decorated the sitting-room. Mrs. J. C. Robb wore a black dull-finished lace ensemble, and the young hostess chose a black silk faille and Killarpey green blousette suit; The prizewinners were Mr. Geoff. Wake, Mrs. C. S. Robb and Miss Rose Duff. Mrs. C. S. Robb and Misses K. Brown, J. Catchpole, P.

Ekdahl, R. Duff, H. Good, M. Strange, and E. Murdoch were among the players.

Bridge for Younger Set. Miss Ola McAnerin chose a gown of. white Swiss organdie delicately patterned in pink when she invited a number of young friends to a mixed bridge party at her home on Friday night. Vases of pink cherry blossom sprays were in the bridge room. Miss Mickey Hawken won a prize for top score, and Misses N. Salmon, M. Ellis, M. Thomson, J. Harding, B. Foy, H. Collins, S. McDonald (Kaupokonui), M. Hawken, J. Lennon, M. Adamson, M. Collins, M. Duffill and J. Wylds were among those present.

Funds for Park Croquet. On Friday afternoon, Mrs. Alex Murdoch and Miss R. Tait were joint hostesses at a progressive five-hundred party to assist the Park Croquet Club at Mrs. Murdoch’s home. Choice tulips, bowls of arctotis and tall jars of cherry blossom were used in the card room and diningroom. Mrs. Murdoch wore an afternoon frock in floral marocain Miss Tait choosing a gown of saxe blue mylesta silk. A competition was won by Mrs.'S. Barrow, and the prizes for progressive five-hun-dred were won by Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. H. Robinson. Included among those pre-
