EFFECT OF INFLUENZA

VOGELTOWN SCHOOL ROLL DROPS. MONTHLY. COMMITTEE MEETING. The prevalence of influenza had caused a serious drop in attendance at the Vogeltown school this week, reported the headmaster, Mr. A. H. McLean, to the monthly meeting of the committee on Monday night. There were present. Messrs, J. M. Thomson (chairman),, T. Paton, E. Bretherton and F. Gadd (secretary).

The present roll .number was 183, stated Mr. McLean, and the average attendance was 174.3, or 96.2 per cent. There were 17 admissions this term and five withdrawals, making a nett gain of 15 pupils. The school had been, visited by Mr. Duncan Mackay, supervisor of agriculture, who reported favourably upon the efforts to continue improvements to the grounds. As levelling was being done he suggested experiments with kikiyu grass as a base for a hardy playground sward. The matter would be taken in hand as soon as cuttings were available.

Mr. J. Swainson gave photographs to the members of the senior Soccer team in recognition of the winning of the Thomson Cup. A number of cash donations were received towards purchase of sports material and the children had a drive for waste material to sell for that purpose.

Entries for the calf-rearing competition were disappointing on account of the inability of would-be entrants to obtain heifer calves.

A letter was received from the Taranaki Cricket Association with reference to theiservices of a cricket coach. It was suggested the committee give £2 2s towards the expense, but the committee decided with regret that lack of funds would prevent it from taking advantage of the offer. ,

In answer to a question the chairman said there was nothing definite to report in connection with the reconstruction of the dam at the swimming pool, which was damaged by the February floods.
