OHANGAI SUNDAY SCHOOL

ENJOYABLE CONCERT GIVEN. A concert by the Ohangai Sunday sthool pupils was held in the Ohangai hall.on Saturday night, there being a good attendance of parents and friends. A welcome was extended by the Rev. B. Melson. The following programme was presented: Piano solo, Voila Townsend; recitation, Melva Trilford; piano solo, Olga Meuli; action song, the pupils; song, Ted Slater; piano duet, George and Janet Thompson; recitation, Betty Meuli; recitation, Edna Gane; one-act. play, “A Question of Ownership,” Joan Byson, Lena Trilford, Frances Trilford and Olga Meuli; an excerpt from ‘“A Bad Boy’s Diary,” the Rev. B. Metson. Games were conducted by the Sunday school teachers, Misses Betty Metson and Peggy Yearbury, music for some of the games being played, by Miss D. Swadling. Winners of competitions were Kathleen Kerrisk and Ted Slater and Barbara Robertson and partner. Supper was served by a >yome n ’s committee, assisted by the pupils. Miss B. Metson extended thanks to those who helped in the preparation of the hall, etc.

ELOCUTION PASSES.

EXAMINATIONS AT HAWERA.

The following are the results of the Trinity College of Music elocution practical examinations in the Hawera area, reports the local secretary, Mr. L. O. Hooker. The examinations were conducted at the Hawera centre by Mr. Alexander Watson: —

Dickie, M.P., left Hawera for Wellington yesterday. GENERAL ITEMS. Play-readers’ Presentation. A number of members of the Hawera Boys and Girls’ Junior Play-reading Clubs assembled at Miss Margaret Simpson’s home on Saturday evening. In appreciation of Mr. and Mrs. Simpson’s help during the recent drama festival and on behalf of the combined clubs Miss Jocelyn Evans presented Mrs. Simpson. with a posy and Master Gerald Hawthorne, secretary of the boys’ club, asked Mr. Simpson to accept a vase for Mrs. Simpson and himself. New Zealand Millionaires.

Mr. H. G. Dickie in his address at Rawhitiroa on Monday night said his opponent in the Patea electorate, Mr. W. G. Simpson, had made a mistake in his figures regarding the number of millionaires in New Zealand, when addressing the electors recently. Mr. Simpson, he said, had taken from the Year Book the figures relating to companies as well as individuals. The companies represented a great many individuals and in some cases there was a large amount of capital not earning any dividends at all. He thought possibly there were only two or three individuals in New Zealand with' incomes of over £50,000. Angler’s Success. Three good fish, totalling in weight, and one smaller one, were caught in a short time in the Otakeho River last week by Mr. J. H. Hooper. The lure used was a minnow. Native Land Court. A sitting of the Native Land Court, expected to last several days, opened at Hawera yesterday. Judge J. W. Browne is presiding. Labour Candidate's Address. Mr. W. G. Simpson addressed a meeting at Waver ley last night on the policy of the Labour Party. TE KIRI DISTRICT NEWS. At the opening of the tennis season at Te Kiri on Saturday there was a large attendance. Mr. H. Wiggins, who was in the New Plymouth Hospital, Has returned Home. Miss K. O’Hanlon, who underwent an operation at New-Plymouth, has returned home. Mr. J. Crawford, who was in the Hawera Hospital, is home again.
