A. MURRAY WINS AGAIN

GOLF FOURSOMES TITLE

j. d. Mclntosh as his partner.

MORTLAND AND J. L. BLACK WIN

HANDICAP TO ELTHAM PLAYERS. By Telegraph—Pi-ess Association. Christchurch, Last Night. With a score of 145 for two rounds J. P. Mortland (Taihape) and J. L. Black (Hutt) won the amateur golf foursomes championship to-day. A. Murray, who won the open championship, scored a second success when, partnered with J. D. Mclntosh, he won the professional foursomes with a score of 145. The day was fine with an easterly breeze. A sensational accident occurred during the afternoon. D. C. Collins (Wairarapa) was struck over the heart by a hooked drive from B. M. Silk. Collins, who was partnered by T. H. Horton, was unable to continue, but recovered after being taken to the clubhouse. Foursomes day is always regarded by the competitors as a pleasant relaxation from the stern business of competition golf. The players to-day obviously went out to play with lighter hearts than on the preceding days of the open championship.

Murray, winner of the open championship, although he had his second success at the tournament, owed rather more than half of his success to his partner Mclntosh, who was very reliable always and occasionally brilliant. Murray confessed that he was feeling the results of the nervous strain of the open championship. Shaw and Bell did not "team” so well. Shaw played his usual strong game, but Bell made more than his share of mistakes. Mortland and J. L. Black, winners of the amateur event, improved greatly on tire form they displayed in the open championship, specially Black. They might have made sensational figures if they had taken advantage of their splendid approaching. Many shortish putts were missed. Details are:— Professional Championship.

ELTHAM SUCCESS

GIBSON AND McKAY PLAY WELL.

DALE'S TEE SHOTS OFF LINE

(By Telegraph—Special to Daily News.) . Christchurch, Last Night.

The Elthafn golfers Gibson and McKay played good golf, combining excellently and making some great recoveries, and Gibson was putting in great style. They did the first round to the turn in 37 and came home in 37, finishing with a 3 at the 17th and a 3 J it the 18th. In the afternoon thtey. were rut in 39 and home in 37.

A missed tee shot at Old Dick dropped into the rough, McKay played a grand second and Gibson holed a 40 feet putt for a par 3. They won the handicap, after a playoff with Goss and Hutchison. Dale and, Abbott were in trouble all

the way during the morning, Dale’s tee shots being off the line. The tum in the afternoon was reached in 35, followed by 4,4, 4,3, but they met disaster at the 14th, Dale pushing his tee shot into the trees, the hole taking 9. ’,

Stewart and O’Callaghan played steadily for a good afternoon round, Stewart playing great irons-" and O’Callaghan rounding it off by putting well. The greens are magnificent although tricky and the fairways patchy. Dale should do well in the amateur championship if he can keep his tee shots straight.
