TENNIS AT FITZROY

CLUB’S POSITION IMPROVED. INTER-CLUB MATCHES ENJOYED.

There was a large attendance at the annual 'meeting of the Fitzroy Tennis Club last night. Mr. E. Holden presided. The club improved its position slightly during the season, stated the report. That the club did not do better was due to a decrease of £ll in subscriptions and £l5 in income from social gatherings. The club had to carry on with a £26 decrease in revenue. To overcome this the committee found it necessary to reduce expenses to a minimum. That the accounts showed practically no loss reflected credit on those responsible for the business of the club. It would be necessary for the club to attempt to 'regain -its lost revenue during the next season.

There -had been a great deal more interest in ladder matches, a record number being played. The club won the wooden spoon in the Soffe Cup competition but its opponents were all of the opinion that the general standard of the club’s play had shown a considerable improvement. Friendly matches were played against Tongaporutu, Stratford and St. Joseph’s Clubs. The B team took part in inter-club matches on Soffe Cup days. The club’s thanks were due to Mrs. Weir for the donation of a trophy, Mr. Billows for a donation of a painting, Mr. Holden for framing it, Mr. Verry for a donation of grass seed and the women for their attention to afternoon tea and to members who assisted in the preparation of the courts. The balancesheet disclosed a loss of £lO 6s Id on the year’s working. An honorarium of £2 was voted to the secretary.

The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. E. Holden; captain, Mr. C. Gatland; .Mr. R. Burgess; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R.'Hall; assistant secretary, Mrs. V. Weir; committee,’ Mrs. H. Holden, Misses M. Hall and ,P. .Verry, and’ Messrs. H. Holden and C. Head; auditor, Mr., Dyke; delegate to the Taranaki Dawn Tennis Association, Mr. R. Hall; selectors, Messrs. Gatland, R. Hall and Mrs. Weir. It was agreed that the present card committee should continue to function till another one was appointed. It was decided to rescind the rule governing the hours of play for junior members, ilfe club captain to have control of such hours in future. The appointment of a greenwarden was referred to the committee.

The opening day would be held on November 2, it was decided.It was agreed that the club should enter a team in the Soffe Cup ..’ompetition. • The meeting passed a vote of thanks to the refiring officials,- the- chairman stating that they achieved a great deal during a difficult year.
