CRICKET UMPIRES

ANNUAL ASSOCIATION MEETING.

OFFICERS FOR YEAR ELECTED.

The annual meeting of the Taranaki Cricket Umpires’ Association was held at New Plymouth last night. Mr. H. R. Billing presided over an attendance of 11. The balance-sheet showed a credit of 19s 3d. Mr. Billing said the credit balance was a good sign, especially as the year had begun with a deficit. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr. H. R. Billing; president, Mr. P. S. Carroll; vice-presidents, Messrs. R. H. Quilliam and J. Brown, and Dr. E. A. Walker; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. W. Moorhead; delegate to Taranaki Cricket Association, Mr. J. Brown; auditor, Mr. C. O. Berg; selection committee, Messrs. H. J. Abram, C. A. Richmond and J. Brown. The position had arisen of bowlers on being no-balled at one end being changed to the other end to avoid the umpire, said Mr. Carroll. It would be necessary for the association to combat this. A bowler was liable to no-balling at one end and not at the other if there was a slope in the ground, said Mr.iA. Ramshaw.

Mr. Carroll considered that nine out of ten New Plymouth bowlers no-balled by lifting the back foot. The secretary was instructed to make application to the Taranaki Cricket Association for passes for umpires to all matches.

He had made a plea for more umpires at the association meeting, said Mr. Brown. There were 20 last year and two more had agreed to join the association. Messrs. Papps and Halpin were elected new members.

A donation of 10s 6d had been forwarded by the New Plymouth Old Boys’ Cricket Club. A vote of thanks was passed. It was left to Mr. Carroll and Mr. Moorhead to make inquiries about insurance for umpires while officiating.
