POPULATION NEEDED

WELLINGTON MAN’S OPINION.

STAGNATION THE ALTERNATIVE.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.

“New Zealand will remain stagnant until we undertake a policy of immigration,” said the president of' the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Mr. M. G. C. McCaul, at its meeting to-night. The people of New Zealand had adopted a selfish attitude.

If there were a flow, of a few thousand people for a month it would create such a “sizzle in trade” that New Zealand would jump into prosperity immediately, he claimed. • It was of the greatest importance that the Dominion should come to depend less on its export trade. If the country could consume more of its butter, meat and wool it would be in a stronger position economically.
