NIAGARA DEADLOCK
MEN REFUSE TO MAN SHIP.
OTHERS MAY BE AFFECTED.
By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. Rec. 8.5 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 15.
A deadlock has been reached in the dispute concerning the Niagara. To-day’s meeting of seamen rejected the proposal emanating from local officials recommending the men to return to work in accordance with a suggestion of Judg* Dethridge. It is expected that the dispute will spread to other ships. The meeting, which was dominated by a militant majority, reaffirmed the decision not to man the Niagara until the Union Company provided a guarantee that only labour recognised by the Vancouver strike committee would be employed at that port, that the ship would not be placed o.» Canadian articles and that the crew would be repatriated should trouble occur.
It is believed that a delegate representing seamen was present and undertook to convey to-day’s resolution to his colleagues. The Seamen’s Union is in communication with the Vancouver strike committee on the subject of the latest developments. Union officials are eager to avoid an extension of the trouble, as a new industrial award covering shipping is due for delivery at Melbourne on October 21. The Union Company has announced that tlie departure of the Niagara has been postponed indefinitely. Instructions are awaited from Wellington as to whether the liner is to be laid up or taken to Vancouver by a volunteer crew. Cooks and stewards on the Niagara will be paid off to-night or early to-morrow.
