NO HOPE OF RECORD
FLIGHT BY KINGSFORD SMITH.
SEALING EXTRA PETROL TANKS.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Oct. 14. Sir Charfes Kingsford Smith has abandoned hope of leaving to-morrow on his flight to Australia, and there is little possibility of starting before the week-end. He is at present considering modifications to satisfy the Air Ministry. Sir Charles expects to leave on Wednesday or Thursday morning. He conferred with the Air Ministry to-day and agreed to remove or seal extra petrol tanks to conform with the requirements, reducing his petrol by about 100 gallons and limiting his range to 1500 miles. Sir Charles is disappointed and has abandoned hope of a record. The Air Ministry informed Sir Charles before he left the United States that he must obtain from American authorities a special certificate covering the racing category in addition to the normal airworthiness certificate. The special certificate was withheld, upon which the Air Ministry cabled the United States, which replied that it was not prepared to guarantee the plane’s airworthiness owing to the inclusion of extra petrol tanks.
