NEW HOUSES BEING BUILT.
British Wireless. Rugby, Sept. 10. The latest- figures relating to slum clearance show that progress has been maintained in spite of the holiday period. The number of new houses begun during July are well in advance of previous figures, which compare as follows: July, 6041; June, 5513; May, 4763; April, 4946.
The number of new houses under construction in May was 28,504 and In April 26,682. There was a total of 10,396 new houses approved during August compared with 6276 in July, 5242 in June and 8808 in May.
MATIERE PERSONALS FLAG FIVE HUNDRED EVENING. Winners of prizes at the flag five hundred evening held in the Matiere hall on Tuesday for the funds of the Church of England were Mesdames A. Taylor and H. Stoddart and Messrs. Coley, and V 7. Taylor. Consolation prizes were won by Mesdames F. Pleasants and Coley and Messrs. G. Box and G. Crozier. Mr. H. Turner conducted the tournament. Card Party and Dance. On Thursday evening a successful card party and dance was organised by Messrs. R. Jamieson and G. Crozier for the Matiere women’s golf committee. Flag five hundred and bridge were played in the supper room. Mrs. H. Turner and Messrs. J. Crozier and D. Wolfsbauer (29 flags) won the first prize at flag five hundred and Mesdames A. Taylor, E. Blackwell and N. Trilford won the consolation prize. Mr. H. Turner was m charge of the cards. Messrs. G. Crozier and R. Jamieson were masters of ceremonies for the dance and Mrs. R. Owen played the music, with extras by Mrs. H. Stoddart. Supper was provided by the women of the golf club. After supper Mr. H. Stoddart, president of the club, presented the prizes and thanked the organisers for their help towards the funds of the women’s club. Matiere Domain Board. A meeting of the Matiere Domain Board was held in the Matiere hall on Wednesday evening, there being present Messrs. R. Dench (chairman), J. Gray (secretary), A. Taylor, H. Turner, Q. Etherington and T. Kelly. Arrangements were made to call tenders for hedge cutting for grazing rights and the digging of a drain. There was a large gathering in the Otangiwai hall on Friday evening for the flag five hundred evening for the hall funds. The winning table was occupied by Messrs. W. Ritchie, P. McDougall and T. Brown (22 flags). Mr. R. Julian conducted the cards. Mrs. E. C. Thomas played the dance music. Mr. H. Fauchelle was master of ceremonies. Arrangements were made for a challenge visit from the Matiere people on September 20. Niho Niho Euchre and Dance. The weekly euchre party and dance in the Niho Niho hall on Saturday evening was well attended, a large number o. Matiere people being present. Mrs. T. Bell and Mrs. S. Stevenson tied for the women’s first prize at euchre, Mrs. Bel! winning the cut. Mr. Curtis won the men’s first prize. Mrs. R. Weinberg won the women’s consolation prize and Mr. A. Bear the men’s. Mr. T. Bell provided the dance music, Mr. A. Margan playing extras. Mr. P. Field was master of ceremonies. Twenty-first Birthdays. On Wednesday evening a large number of friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Crozier for the 21st birthday of Miss C. Roebuck. A pleasant evening was passed with dancing, community singing and cards. Mr. A. Sampson proposed the toast of the \ guest of honour an.J wished her the best of luck and happiness. Miss Roebuck received a number of gifts. Among those present were Mesdames J. Crozier, H. Turner, A. Taylor, W. Kelly, Andrew (Te Awamutu), Rankin, W. de Malmanche, G. Etherington, Misses C. Roebuck, A. Owen, E*. McAvady, J. Andrew, E. Owen, B. Binns, E. Gray and P. Etherington. To celebrate the twenty-first birthdays Of Mrs. W. Dunn and , Mrs. H. Cribb a party was held at their home on Saturday evening. A pleasant time was P^ with dancing and games and both Mrs Dunn and Mrs. Cribb received a number of presents. Among those present were Mesdames W. Dunn, H. Cribb and W. Gray, Misses P. McAvady, A. Owen, E. Gray’ and E. Owen. JVIr. J. Margan, on behalf of the guests, wished Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Cribb prosperity and happiness. Matiere Golf Club. Playing in the semi-finals of the Matiere Golf Club championship on Sunday, G. Baker beat H. Turner 3 and 1. Baker will play the final with the winner of the match between J. V. Ross and W. Baker. In the junior championship R. Jamieson beat J. Turner 1 up and H. Stoddart beat J. Hannan 6 and 5. Matiere Personals. < Miss J. C. Fauchelle, Taumarunui, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Fauchelle, Otangiwai. Mrs. Wylie, Douglas, is spending a holiday with Mrs. O’Donnell, Matiere. . Mrs. R. Porter, Matiere, spent a few days at Taumarunui recently. Mr. and Mrs. McCullum, formerly of New Plymouth, are living at Matiere. Miss C. Roebuck, Matiere, is visiting her parents at Okato. Mrs. Andrew, who visited Matiere, has returned to Te Awamutu. Miss D. Foote, who visited Mrs. L. Ralph, Matiere, has returned to Ohura. Miss D. Alanson, Matiere, is visiting her sister, Mrs. J. Dunne, Clevedon. Miss T.
