20,000 MEAT SHOPS

USE OF NEW ZEALAND CREDITS?

LAUGH RAISED IN PARLIAMENT.

(By Telegraph—Special Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. An allegation that the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, hfed proposed the opening of 20,000 retail butchers’ shops in England in order to persuade the British Government to conclude a meat agreement was mentioned in the House of Representatives to-day by Mr. A. J- Stallworthy (Ind., Eaen). Mr. Stallworthy said it had been stated that Mr. Coates had threatened to use the London credits of the Reserve Bank, amounting to £24,000,000, to establish 20,000 butchers* shops in London and the English provinces unless a workable agreement was arranged. He gave notice to ask the Minister whether he had ever proposed to take the action suggested in the report, and if so whether he had proposed to confiscate or negotiate the Sterling assets or to consult Parliament on the matter. Mr.' Stallworthy’s question brought a laugh from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, but Mr. Coates was not in the House at the time.
