WAIMATE’S SUCCESS

FOURTH GRADE RUGBY CHAMPION.

COMPLIMENTARY DINNER GIVEN.

The Waimate fourth grade Rugby football team, winner of the Taranaki championship, was entertained by Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Massey on Saturday evening at a complimentary dinner. In proposing the toast of the team, Mr. W. Bourke, president of the Waimate Club, congratulated it on its fine exhibition of football and stated the club was proud that the team had won the championship in the jubilee year of the Taranaki Rugby Union. Messrs. J. Christie (selector), W. Edwards (captain) and M. Whalen (vice-captain) stated they were pleased with the way the team had played against Tukapa in the final, which was a splendid game. They thanked Mr. and Mrs. Massey for their kindness hi providing the dinner. The toast of the “Waimate Football Club” was proposed by Mr. C. A. Burke, who congratulated the club and fourth grade team on its success. Mr. L. Whalen responded. The toast, “The Tukapa Team,” was proposed by Mr. J. Christie, who stated it was a pleasure to play against such a team of sportsmen. “The Host and Hostess” (Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Massey) was proposed by Mr. E. Bourke, Mr. Massey replying. Mr. Edwards made a presentation to Mr. Christie in recognition of his services as coach and selector. WOMEN PLAYERS BEAT MEN. TE NGUTU GOLF CLUB CONTEST. The annual handicap match between the men and women of Te Ngutu Golf Club was played on Saturday, the women winning by four games to two, with one all square. The results were; Miss E. O’Dowd and Mrs. Cottrell lost to Grace and Evetts 2 down, Mrs. O. Robertson and Miss M. O’Dowd and Good and Betts all square, Mrs. Luxton and Miss Hutchinson beat Penny and Linn 2 up, Misses Betts beat Stevenson and Luxton 2 and 1, Misses J. Meuli and K. O’Sullivan beat Graydon and B. Barclay 5 and 4, Miss E. O’Sullivan and Mrs. Penny lost to Oldfield and Cottrell 2 down, Mesdames Struthers, B. Barclay and R. Treweek beat A. Linn and Withers 3 and 2. TE NGUTU WOMEN’S GOLF. DRAW FOR L.G.U. MEDAL ROUND. The draw for the September L.G.U. medal round to be played at Te Ngutu to-day is: Miss Sutherland plays Mrs. B. Barclay, Mrs. Treweek plays Mrs. O’Sullivan, Miss Audrey Betts plays Miss M. O’Dowd, Mrs. Brown plays Miss Carter, Mrs. L. Preece plays Mrs. Evetts, Miss J. Joyce plays Mrs. Woods, Miss Alice Betts plays Miss Meuli, Mrs. Luxton plays Mrs. J.* Barclay, Miss Oldfield plays Miss Downey, Mrs. plays Miss E, O’Dowd, Miss K. O'Sullivan plays Mrs. Penny, Mrs. Robertson plays Miss Hutchinson, Miss O’Sullivan plays Mrs. Struthers, Mrs. Betts plays Miss O’Dowd. GENERAL ITEMS. Hurleyville Cricket Social. A euchre party and dance was held in aid of the Hurleyville Cricket Club on Friday. The prizes were wan by Mrs. R. Palmer, Alton, and Mr. S. Rush. Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs. Douglas.
