BURDEN OF TAXATION
PROMPT REDUCTION URGED.
MR. C. A. WILKINSON’S VIEWS.
(By Telegraph—Special Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. “I venture to say that the people of New Zealand are the most highly taxed community in the wide world without exception,” said Mr. C. A. Wilkinson (Ind., Egmont), when speaking to the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives to-day. “If we look at the total taxes paid by the people of this small country, ’ he said, “we find that in the 12 months up to March 31, 1935, the general Government collected £24,737,939, which is equal io £l5 18s 7d a head. On top of that we have local body taxation which represents £5,541,255 and is equal to about £3 15s a head. Those two amounts make a total of £l9 13s 7d.”
Mr. Wilkinson appealed to the Government for an immediate scaling down of taxation. He said Customs taxes could be reduced easily. “We could reduce the duties on goods coming into the country which have no bearing upon local industries,” he added. “Many lines that come in are not manufactured in New Zealand"; y6t they are heavily taxed. High landing charges make the price of goods so high that the people cannot buy them. This is largely brought about by the increased exchange rate and the heavy sales tax.” 1
