CONFERENCE OF B.M.A.
PAGEANTRY AND COLOUR. INSTALLATION OF PRESIDENT. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 9.45 p.m. Melbourne, Sept. 10. Colour and ceremonial marked the opening of' the British Medical Association annual meeting at the town hall to-day. In the presence of the Governor-Gen-eral, Sir Isaac Isaacs, and distinguished medical men from all parts of the Empire the new president, Sir James Barrett, was inducted into the office. Many of the 1500 delegates wore brightly coloured academic robes of scarlet, violet, old gold or green. Eloquent tribute to the medical profession was paid by Sir Isaac Isaacs, who described it as a “beneficent firmament which created light for the path of the human race.” In his presidential address Sir James Barrett, summing up hospital finance methods in England, Victoria and New Zealand, said if the people were taxed for hospital purposes they were not likely to make voluntary contributions. Among the delegates presented to Sir James Barrett were the New Zealanders Drs. Carmalt, Jones and Macky. Late this afternoon special B.M.A. services were conducted at St. Paul’s and St. Patrick’s Cathedrals. Functions tonight included the president's reception at the town hall.
